A pyrometer is used to measure Exhaust Gas Temps. Most mount them pre turbo and some post turbo. When pulling a load, it is wise to keep temps below 1300 or so (pre turbo) - someone will give the specifics - there is debate on this also. This gauge is also used to monitor shutdown temps. If the engine is shut down before the turbo has a chance to cool, "coking" will occur. I'd explain, but I'd probably screw it up and get flamed by someone who really knows. You'll get more details from other members.

Ok, because I noticed on one of the gauge sites that a video of the gauges in action had two on the a pillar, a pyrometer and an EGT. Is this because one is for pre and the other post?? Just curious if there was a difference?

Maybe this will help. A pyrometer is a name given to a class of instruments used to measure high temps, such as the Exhaust Gas Temp, be that pre or post turbo. Maybe what you saw was just that, a unit monitoring pre and the other post.

tjtruillo, How's about posting that web-site with the guages in action. I would like to see that. Gunny
