HELLO EXPERTS,

STILL WONDERING WHERE TO MOUNT MY BANKS PYRO GUAGE! THE BANKS BOYS SAY PRE-TURBO (EXHAUST MAN. ). THEY ALSO SAY THAT THE TEMP INDICATION IS NOT ACCURATE UNTIL ABOVE 300 DEG.

-- AT IDLE, WILL THE EXHAUST TEMP GET DOWN TO 300 DEG. ?

-- AT WHAT TEMP SHOULD I WAIT FOR TO BE SURE THE TURBO IS COOL ENOUGH FOR SHUT DOWN?

-- WHAT IS THE MORE IMPORTANT READING, THE TEMP GOING INTO THE TURBO OR THE TEMP LEAVING THE TURBO.

-- AT WHAT TEMP, PRE-TURBO, IS A GOOD SAFE TURBO SAVING TEMP TO WAIT FOR BEFORE SHUTDOWN?

IN OTHER WORDS GUYS, THIS NEW GUY NEEDS TO KNOW HOW TO USE THE EGT INDICATION!

ANY HELP OUT THERE?!

This is very simple, 1300 degrees pre turbo for extened periods. Let the thing cool down to 300 for shut down and yes pre turbo is where you want it.

PINE,

THANKS FOR THE TIME.

UNDERSTAND THAT 1300 DEG IS THE MAX I WANT TO SEE FOR EXTENDED TIME PERIODS? I KNOW THIS IS QUITE BASIC, BUT HOW WOULD I REDUCE THE TEMP WHILE PULLING. EVER HERE OF THE PROB BREAKING OFF DUE TO FATIGUE AND EATING THE TURBO?

SWEdholm, welcome aboard. On the turbo eating the pyro probe thing, I have read of a probe tip disappearing, but as far as I can recall, no one has reported any damage due to a probe breaking and causing any damage when mounted pre-turbo.

Only two ways to lower egt's, less fuel or more air. Since less fuel usually isn't an option, you gotta spend some money to get more air into the engine to burn the fuel available.

To add air, look at a larger capacity air filter, a search will yeild tons of info. Look up Scotty, BHAF, and AFE for starters. Next is a larger turbo or turbo housing for the stock turbo. Next is to consider the exhaust side of things, again lots of options. Cheap is to remove the muffler, then look at a free flowing replacement, no muff at all or a complete 4" system. Usually don't need 4" till you get over 300hp.

Happy reading.

PS, take a moment to fill our you signature field showing us the paticulars on your truck, that'll help with advise in the future, and also, (I know this sounds silly, but) all caps is considered shouting, not approproite most of the time.

Good Luck, Ronnie

Moparguy,

Thankyou for the response. Very good information! I am new yes, but also "basically trainable".

Question; do you also agree that the pyro should go "pre-turbo" (in the exhaust man. )? Also, do you agree I should normally not see more than approx. 30lbs of boost and 1300 deg egt while driving, and 300deg before shut-down?

Thanks again

Welcome aboard!!

With a stock configuration, you should only be seeing about 20# boost max. As the egts go, with the HO engine that you have, some guys have reported high temps (over 1300F) with the stock set-up.

I went pre-turbo with the probe, I want to see whats going into the turbo before it gets there, not after it comes out- that could be too late. Probe position is a matter of preference. Gauges are probably the single most important BOMB you need to do, even if you decide to leave you truck stock. Pyro, boost and fuel pressure. Again this is a matter of preference, but I think its the best $$ spent and the cheapest insurance.

Change a few things here and there, and you'll see 30-35# boost, and quite friendly egts. A free flowing air filter like K&N or amsoil are probably the cheapest to start with, and they will fit right in the stock box. Get that exhaust open. Either remove the muffler, or replace the whole system with a turbo-back 4"

Use the search function, there is piles and piles of information here!!

This is a great place to hang out, and a great bunch of guys/gals too! Almost everything you ever wanted to know is just a few keystrokes away... :)

jtisdale,

Thank you! Again, very good info.

I am beginning to think about the exhaust. The turbo back 4" sounds like the least restrictive. I will get the egt and boost guages in this week and begin to observe.

Once again, thanks for the time and advice. Your right, this is a good place to be for information +!!

SWEdholm, I do agree with the preturbo pyro probe location, that's where mine is. I feel it gives a more accurate picture of what's going on inside the engine temp wise. Some that have mounted probes both pre and post turbo and montored have reported that the temp difference is not necessary linear. Sometimes the difference is 300 degress sometimes more. I just couldn't get comfortable with the possibility of not knowing the temps in the most accurate manner reasonably possible.

I agree with BPINE on shutdown, I usually wanna see 300 or below, for sure if the truck has been working hard. When it's working for a expended time, I try to keep temps at or below 1250deg. A lot of guys run a lot hotter with no obvious short term problems. If I'm passing someone and it spikes 1400 or so for a few seconds, I don't worry.

Good luck, Ronnie
