On the 2006 trucks it seems like I read somewhere that there is some webbing inside of the exhaust manifold that you don't wan to get into when you drill for the pyro senor hook up.

Any particular place to start drilling where you can drill and also get the tap

in with out getting in trouble? A picture would be great of someone who has done this.

Here is a pic from my 03, the manifold is different than your 06 but it's close enough. Just remember to stay just left of center, that is where the divider is.

you can also put it right by #3 cyl on top. just drill straight down nothing in the way. sorry no pics yet.

I don't think there is any difference in the manifold of the 2005 and 2006. Here is where I put mine.

This has the advantage of picking up the temp off the #5/6 cylinders... ;)

I drilled and tapped them both, while they were on the truck. I've done this with both my 2001 and 2005 CTD's. Do a search on this and you will find detailed instructions. Here are some quick hi-lights:

1. Make sure you have the proper drill size to drill the hole for your probe. Most probes come in a 1/8 or 1/4 size and the drill size is critical to get a good tap. The drill size will always be smaller then the tap size. Make sure you have a good and sharp drill bit. If your not sure, go buy a new one or sharpen the one you have. It isn't especially difficult to drill into the manifold, once you get it started.

2. When you drill, use plenty of grease, especially when you start to penetrate the manifold. Remove the drill two or three times, while drilling, to clean off the grease (which will contain metal shavings) and recoat the hole and drill. This is especially important when you are just about through to the inside.

3. When you tap the hole, make sure you are perpendicular to the hole so that you don't tap it at an angle.

4. After you put the probe in, start your truck and let it idle for a couple of minutes. Any small metal that you may have gotten into the manifold will blow out while the turbo is not spinning up.

Others on the board can give you other ways of doing this. Everyone has a favorite way. This is the way I've always done it and it works just fine... ;)

How Deep Do You Tap?

Only one time have I read that it is important not to tap too deeply into the manifold for fear of the pyrometer probe backing up against the inside of the manifold.

I was told to tap in enough so that you can turn the pyro 3-1/2 turns into the manifold wall. That will keep it from going in too far & touching the inside, back wall of the manifold.

Is this a REAL concern?

My "Powerstroke" neighbor is installing an Edge J/A in his bosses '05 Dodge/Cummins & probably does not know about this. I'd like to be able to forwarn him about this potential problem.

Thanks.

don't tap to deep because if you do the pyro won't get tight. you can kinda see how thick the manifold is. just start the tap and turn in a few turns and back it out. then thread in the pyro fitting and see how many turns you went in. if you want it deeper just tap it a little further. by doing it this way you can also clean the tap and keep more shavings out of the manifold. I believe the pyro sensor slides in/out of the fitting so you can feel if it bottoms out. but i think you just want 3/4" polking through so i don't effect exh. flow.

only on some probes... my autometer probe did not have that option
