I just purchased an exhaust elbow from Cummins to tap and drill for my thermocouple so If something goes wrong, I didnt screw up my only one leaving me stuck. Cost was only $50. 00. What I need to know is if there is a gasket between the elbow flange and the turbo flange? I know some time back, Genos had an elbow exchange program so someone has had to have removed this elbow. Any gasket????? What should I torque the bolts to?

It's the pre/post debate again. LOL

Serously, I am getting ready to install mine pre turbo because of the sucess of the members here. However, I was reading the AutoMeter instructions (yes I know) and they state if it is a turbo installation go post.

I know it is a raging debate, so here is my $. 02 on why I am putting it post turbo.



1- NO performance enhancements... . maybe a K&N and an EZ one day



2- I dont really tow... . sometimes a 2500 lb boat with trailer w\ surge brakes... I think the Cummins can handle it!!



3- Main concern is shutdown or something going awol



4- Too chicken to do it pre-turbo..... and no real reason to.

I did the same thing that Challenger-II is doing. Before I had any mods, I went post-turbo for the purpose of monitoring shut down temp. Now that I have made a few mods, I added a pre-turbo probe as well. Given what he will be towing (assuming NO mods), I don't see a problem with a post-turbo setup. My two cents...
 
Good points Challenger, no reason to duck.

I think most people who say Post is better is because there too scared to drill and tap the manifold. So at least your honest
 
Bottom line, Challenger, it's your truck and you should place the egt probe where you want. Of course, if you really wanted pre-turbo, I know at least two TDR members, myself included, that would be more than happy to give ya a hand with the install. Where is Milford, NJ anyway, Northern or Southern NJ ?

Well... I'm only a stones throw away in Sussex County. Let me know. If I still had my exhaust elbow I would send it down to you, but that went when I sold the HX35, sorry.

When I installed my pyro some time ago, I installed it post-turbo for fear of it breaking and destroying my turbo. Then I subscribed to the TDR and watched all the debating back and forth, and read all past threads that I could find relating to the subject. I found not even one single complaint about a thermocouple tip burning off. I then took a real good look around a local airport that I fly at and talked to the mechanics ... ... . it seems that all aircraft that I could find had them placed pre-turbo ..... and absolutely no problems. If pre-tubo is safe enough for the FAA and all of their regulations, it is safe enough my HX-35. Last week I finally found time to move mine to the exhaust manifold. What I have noticed is that it is way more accurate ... ... . and that the 150 to 300 degree differential is not even close to accurate. Had I done some heavy towing post-turbo set up, I could have easily melted a piston. Besides now it is much more fun to watch ... . a lot more action. Just my 2 cents worth.
 
I KNOW IT'S BEEN ASKED BEFORE...

What are you all doing about the chip fragments from drilling and tapping the manifold. If I could work around that, it's pre-T for me!
 
I wasn't trying to "Debate" with him, I just wanted to know his reasons for wanting to go post turbo is all.



Put it where you want it. I was just curious.
 
use grease and a low speed drill to start with, then after getting the hole and tapping it(use grease on tap too) use a magnet and chase it in the hole in all directions, taking it out to clean it often, when it stops coming out with metal your done.



start the truck and let it idle for a minute, then go enjoy you new guage. :D



the remaining debris will pass through the exhaust side of the turbo just fine.

Some times we have no choise when time is inportant i was going pre but the probe i got with the guage after waiting three weeks was to long and was crimped at the factory in Mexico the probe would have gone in one side and out the other side of the manifold ,just made it in the port provided by Pac-brake worked fine . Later when moving switch made big problem with blown fuze and who knows what . But second probe later will be pre turbo with a switch same guage. all the probes we install in the new freightliners built in the portland plant i work at are post!!! not that freightliner knows what they are doing imo!!

I put my probe post turbo. The reason is I have 28 cummins powered trucks (KW, White,Pete,& IHC) in my yard at work and all of them had the probe post turbo. When I looked in the manuals for the engines it is recommended to put the probe 4" down from the turbo. Now none of these engines are "B"s, but they are Cummins.
