I am getting ready to drill the hole in my exhaust elbow for the future installation of a pyrometer. Any suggestions for the location?

Welcome to TDR.

If you use the search function you will find a ton of info about this and many other topics.

Here is a pic of what I did. There are more in my readers rig gallery.

The thread on EGT's from Cummins says that the probe should be 2 to 4 inchs from the turbo . Is that what the installation instructions say that come with the pyrometer?

IMO you might as well do it right the first time and put it in the manifold. Its much more accurate. Things such as boost pressure, intake air temp, and how heavy your right foot is can make the temp. difference be as much as 200 to 500 degrees at any point in time between the two locations. Iknow your probably worried about the probe breaking and going through your turbo, but chances of that happening are very very slim at best.

I put the probe pre-turbo on my '01 'cause I wanted a more "accurate" reading. It's in the elbow on the 04. 5 for cooldown purposes. The pre probe would go down to 250F in about 15 secs, while the post probe takes about 2-3 mins to get down to 300. I guess it all depends what you want to be able to do with it.

There are pics in my reader rig of where I installed mine post turbo. I used a right angle air drill, it is tight to the firewall there. The accurate comments about pre vs. post makes no sense whatsoever, the probe is as accurate as it is regardless of where it is mounted. Without getting into the whole pre post discussion, do a search there have been several long threads about it, also call Cummins and ask them where to locate it.
