I just recieved my Isspro pyrometer gauge and I'm looking at it and reading the directions. The part that is puzzling me is the probe has a bushing with it that is suppose to be "welded into a 3/4" hole in the manifold". Now, do I have to do this or should I be able to just drill the 7/16" hole and tap it out with a 1/4 NPT tap and insert the probe? I assume I can but I would like to hear from somebody who has a little more experience than the zero that I currently have. Thanks

You are correct. Drill and tap the exhaust manifold. I have one on my 89 and one on the 99. Drill in the center of the rear part of the manifold. about 3/4 to 1" above the flange. You do not need to remove the turbo. I was skeptical about this, but if you use a vacuum and then a magnet to get the few chips out of the manifold you'll be fine.

Thanks Big D,
I already had the turbo off the truck since I was putting a 16cm housing on the truck and figured now was a good time to put the probe in. It was remarkably painless.

Pat,
Glad to hear it is going well. If the probe that you have is a bushing with a set screw to hold the probe in place, than that is the one that I originally had. To me, that probe setup belongs in the exhaust pipe and I wasn't going to attempt to try to weld that little bushing to the exhaust manifold. I returned the original probe for the one that screws into a 1/4 NPT hole (it is less money). Works great with no leaks.

LT, the probe with the 1/4" compression fitting is luckily the one that came with the kit. I also slapped on the boost gauge. I started to think I had messed up the installation somehow though because the truck wouldn't make any boost sitting in the garage then I remembered a guy tellin' me the truck had to be under a load to see the boost. I drove around the block but it was 10 O'clock and my gauges were tywrapped out to my hood release to keep them out of the way so I couldn't see exactly how much boost. Just need to install the gauges and the the transmission temp probe and I'll be done.
