I am in need of opinions of pyrometer troubles. My ISSPRO pyrometer no longer works. I pulled the gauge out, checked the connections and all seems fine. Is there any maintenance of the probe or something that I should be doing to have it work? I have had it almost 2 years now..... do they last longer than this or is this the norm for these gauges?

Since it seem nobody else wants to chime in. I would start with the thermalcouple. If you have a volt meter, heat the bulb with a torch and read the voltage on the leads. There should be a sheet on the values in your paperwork (if you saved it). Anyway, the voltage should go up as the temperature climbs. These voltages are in millivolts. If the voltage goes up, the gauge is bad.

My Westach probe failed after about 2 years, early signs were erratic EGT readings - which were quickly replace by a totally dead meter. Bought a replacement probe from Genos, all was well once more. Most probes seem to last nearly forever, but there are occasional failures - looks like you and I were a pair of the "lucky" ones...

Well, yesterday it all of a sudden it started working again. Why would it be like this? Is there some connection loose somewhere? Can the thermalcouple sometimes work and then not? I checked all the connections at the gauge and all seemed fine there. Any more ideas? Thanks

Every now and then, my SPA EGT gauage will start to act up. I have found that some cleaning and dielectric grease on the plugs and tightening the small screws on the plugs will fix the problem. Mine seem to act up when it is very rainy/humid, but has to be REAL wet for it to start acting weird. Just a thought.

My ISSPRO did the same thing when I called ISSPRO they told me to recrimp all the wire ends. That fixed it 5 years ago and it's still working fine.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to go over the wires again to be sure I am not missing anything simple. I didn't check the small connections for tightness behind the gauge, they just appeared to be tight. Will check that again too, and report back.

Mine did the same thing. It was the probe. you could give the wires a twist and it would start working. New probe fixed it, but it's acting up again. Same place, same way.

Well, I went out and tore it all apart, and found nothing. I put the di-electric grease on all the connections and made sure everything was tight. Even pulled the probe out and cleaned the soot off it. Still not working. I will have to try and find a probe somewhere, go from there.

While you had the probe out, did you heat it up and watch the gauge? You don't need power to do this, just run like hell or have a partner.

No, no partner to do that and I am a slow runner..... :-laf :-laf

Do you have a yellow or blue wire harness. I sent my gauge and yellow harness to Isspro when it stopped working and they advised I switch to the blue one. Give them a call.

I have the yellow harness... . I also e-mailed ISSPRO and got no response. I would try and call but have been working a lot lately. I think I will just get an autometer gauge, possibly out at Indy. Have to see what the vendors bring with them. Thanks for all the tips and advice.
