Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Q: Drag comp

i have the edge drag comp i dont have the the pump wire hooked up cause i heard you can fry vp44 just looking for some advise here ,also what would be a next good mod. What weight oil and brand do you guys run in nv 4500 i dont want to buy mopor oil

Welcome to the TDR Lots of good info here. Start by filling out your signature in the user control section. That way everyone can get a better idea what to recommend for you. If you have the drag comp there's a lot of fun to be had there, but you need some gauges first to keep an eye on things. Most are going to recommend tapping the wire, b/c that's when the fun starts. Tapping the wire itself is not what fries pumps persay, it's usually lack of fuel caused by a bad lift pump. Fuel pressure is very important to watch with the VP44. Good luck I'm sure others will chime in with some thoughts

You can go to a GM dealer and get the NV-4500 oil for almost half the price as Dodge or you can use Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil, etc. As far as the Comp ruining things, my pump wire has been tapped since 42,000 miles I think, 40 something anyways and I now have 168,410 on the truck and the original VP is still going strong

From what I've read, tapping the pump wire will tell you if you have a good pump or not. If the pump is weak The part will eventually fail with or without the comp, but the wire tap speeds the process. I think I read that if your pump lasts the first 60seconds of the tap you should be fine



I'd say go for it, get gauges and tap the wire



Hang on fot the first 60secs:-laf

Tap the wire, just make sure you have a fuel pressure gauge. That way you can tell if your lift pump starts to go out. In reality, your injector pump could last forever as long a you don't let the lift pump go out and starve it for fuel. As long as you catch the lift pump first, your VP44 will be fine.

Next mod..... Gauges, Fass or Airdog fuel system. Then order a pump cover to tap the pump wire... . www.tstproducts.com has the pump covers in the bargain section for $44. 00. The truck will be a whole different beast with this done... trust us.
