just curious if anyone has tried this. . the fass filters are 3u i believe, and they are originally hydraulic filters i believe. the media of the filter should hold up to hot lube oil. with the avability of 2u filters on aftermarket systems [nictane, glacier diesel... ] using the cat spec 2u filters, i think they could make for an inexpensive bypass filtering system.

i know at work, for the main lube oil filters on the emd engines, and the primary fuel oil filters, they are the same [come out of the same box] they are 28u i believe, but the same principal should apply to 2u filters. .

unless i find something out that could make me change my mind, i think i am going to try this. i am currently piecing together the components i will need for a fuel pusher pump upgrade for my 04 [pump will be a walbro gsl392] and i am going to use a 2u fleetguard or cat fuel filter. now if i get a second filter head and another filter, i could plumb in a bypass setup at the same time. i think i would stick a 20-50u strainer on the bypass filter outlet just so i can monitor any filter detioriation. .

any comments or opinions???

I would NOT USE a fuel filter for oil! HOT oil will deteriorate the fuel filter componenets in a BIG hurry!

which components... ? the filter media should hold up to it pretty well. . in some applications [eg: pt fuel system], the fuel can get pretty hot

couldnt you use a hydrolic filter?

i have thought about that too. . if i can find some that are 2u or finer that are spin on [maybe with a 1"-12 as i have some filter heads that size already?] and they will handle the temp no problem. some hyd systems at extremes will get past 250*f

FWIW don't do like I usually do. .

Sometimes I get an idea and fall in love with it. I then convince myself that I can pull it off. When it is all said and done it would have been cheaper to buy and install (albeit a possibly slightly inferior deisign to mine) system and be done with it.

Don't ask me about my sprinkler system I have sunk 4 weekends into and 600. 00 only to be waiting on a professional to come out tommorrow and fix it.

been there, done that. . [didn't get the t-shirt though;)]

all i really need is a filter and head to mount it to. plumbing is something i have no trouble doing and getting most parts for [lots of hydraulic shops around] and i have 10's of feet of -6, -8, -10, and some -12 hydraulic line at home and field serviceable fittings for them. .

AHA!! Sooo I DO have a long lost twin that mom never told me about... nice to meet ya!, LOL!

It nice to find family in unlikely places Oo.

Well the sprinkler guy came out and ran the system. Looked me dead in the eye and said "Don't look like that zone 3 is working very good" ARGHHH!

:-laf

Anyways I was complemented on all my work and they think all I need is a well cleaning.

So what did you decide to do on the filter project ? I ordered my oilguard last friday while they were still onsale. I tried to talk her into half price filters if I bought 6 but no budge.

still undecided for now...

i go on vacation next week, so i got a week to research and gather parts. i will be buying some heads for the fuel delievery upgrade using the 1"-14 2u filters [cat or fleetguard, maybe baldwin] i am tempted to get a few extra filters and cut one apart and examine if it can hold up to the lube oil. i am pretty confident it will, and it could net me a functional bypass setup. may not be small a micron rating as a tp/cartridge bypass setup [going sub-micron] but better than 15u-30u of the stock lube oil filters. another option is using hydraulic filters. i can chat with the guys at the hydraulic shops and see what micron ratings they can get that are decent priced spin on elements

***edit***

i guess not such an original idea on my part...

2u fuel filter as lube oil bypass thread on bob is the oil guy forums
