Quality control to major tom

Ive been doing some light reading. The quality guys at chrysler, mitsubishi and mercedes are putting their heads together.

The big three has adopted a universal quality rating called the QS900.



The big boys claim that by 07. Chrysler will be at the same level of quality as Mercedes. With a lot more attention to the little details. The little stuff that makes foreign luxury so nice is going to start filtering over.

QS 9000 will ensure all jobs have specs and are preformed the same on all shifts. If the company can complete and work to this goal a lot of improvments will be made.

QS9000? You sure about that? That quality cert. existed about 10 years ago, and is long since replaced by other cert's... . EVERYONE was QS9000 in the mid 90's or you didn't do business in the auto industry...



Furthermore, QS9000 is a joke. It requires LOTS of money, and time taken away from the business of making cars... . and I mean LOTS, to prepare for QS9000 approval... . then there are the audits ... . OH THE FLASHBACKS of MORE RED TAPE AND PAPER TRAILS... . which it was suppose to reduce.

Based on what I see with my truck, DC has a HUGE distance to go before they win ANY QC award. I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad.

You must have a lemon then, because my truck is a whole lot higher quality than a GM or Ford... . being have owned both.

Hell, they won't be through the f'in MEETINGS to set the timetable for the MEETINGS that will be required by 2007

Qs 9000 is it. However they also must be ISO certified as well. What this means is nothing in term of quality,other than just as stated. Do as you say and prove it. I have been through the bs my home dept at work was first to get cert in the plant. I think it is nothing other than a money gig to pay UL for the audit. I was told it was $53,000 for 3 auditors for 3 days. They walk up to the employee and ask them questions to see if the run the job as they say they do??? I can tell you if you have pride in your work you can pass,if you have enough money you'll pass. How many days in advance do you think they know about audits?? plenty, for the record the QS was about 3 years ago

I went through QS9000 audits back in 1996/7... It's a waste of companies energy filled with ignorant rules.

QS9000 is the first step it is really the audits that make the diffrence. It helped us with quality control and getting spec for jobs written. It is just a tool and weather or not it is used right will decide wheather it works or not. It couldnt hurt much.

I work on MB (as well as Porsche & BMW) for a living. Believe me, DC needs to set their sights a little higher than to aspire to MB QC levels. The last 5 years of production have been a downhill slide for Mercedes in terms of quality of both fit & finish, and quality of parts, especially electrical.
