Hey guys - I'm wondering which 12V models had the 6 individual valve covers and which ones had the solid grey valve cover.

I've got a really goofy friend that's wanting to do a Cummins conversion in a 2001 Ford crew cab, and he says he doesn't like the "look" of the 12V motors with the individual covers - what a dork.

He wants a "clean" look under the hood and is considering a common rail motor! We've gotta stop him before it's too late. Hopefully he'll be satisfied with a 12V with a solid cover. Is it possible to put a solid valve cover on any of the 12V models?

Thanks!

All 12V's to my knowledge have the 6 valve covers. But 94-up have a thin metal plate that covers them up and say CUMMINS TURBO DIESEL on it.

Heck, I even took the "thin metal plate" off when I changed valve springs and didn't put back on because I peferred the grey tin can covers. I gGuess to each their own. :)

Yep that sounds like a Ford guy alright. I gotta say, I like the individual covers too for some reason. Different strokes... ... ... ..... I suppose. :)

Not trying to hijack the thread.

I also like the individual covers and have removed the one-piece cover - looks better IMHO.

I'm wanting to polish up the aluminum covers sometime - any thoughts on replacement bolts that look good?

Allen head?

Replacement hex head?

So what's wrong with this look?

All 12V's have individual rocker covers. You couldn't use a solid one piece rocker cover because the injection lines run between the covers.

I left my cover off too after doing the valves. The rubber grommets were shot, and I like the individual look. I was thinking of painting them with crinkle coat or hammer finish, or maybe a spray in bed liner material. I don't think they get too hot. Maybe your friend can get some aluminum stock and have something cut into it to fancify!

depending on how much time i have when i finally get around to adjusting the valves i may polish mine but the long cover is off and will probably stay off no matter what i do, if for no other reason the two times i have taken it off atleast one of the valve covers has come off with it and that's a pain

Hate to sound like a broken record, but topless here too. I think the top plate looks cheezy. Should prolly go on ford, anyway... . too bad you'd have to JB weld it to the top of the FlowerStroke. ;)

Well, I was thinking of painting the valve covers and had time today. Also did the intake horn. I used hammer finish paint and like the look. Now I have to clean up the rest of the engine compartment! :{

I made a diamond plate cover to go over the valve covers that I powder coated a high gloss black. I need to clean the engine bay again, but the wife is pushing me to finish this conversion, so I am working more on getting done with the 72 Chevy than on keeping it spot clean all of the time. The diamond plate keeps a theme through out and ties the truck all together. I have diamond plate accents under the hood, in the cab, and in the bed.

i have a buddy that owns a fab shop. he was working on some billit aluminum valve covers. not sure if hes do em up yet but a few here i believe have talked to him. looked like that would be the way to go.

Is this a NAPA paint?

It's Rustoleum. I got it at Home Depot :-laf . They used to have it in a dark blue, which I wanted, but not anymore. Practice with it a bit to get a good result. You have to go slow so you get a good amount down, but not so slow that it runs. It's not as fancy as billet aluminum or diamond plate, but I bet it's cheaper :-laf .

I Emailed PMI (yourcovers.com) to see if they would do valve covers for the cummins motors. . similar to the finned out sand cast differential covers that are popular... They emailed me back wanting the part numbers for the different model cummins valve covers and I sent them what I could find... They stopped corresponding. .

I would love to have some finned valve covers from them... and a set of diff covers. .

I may try and email them again.
