I am looking for some information about what air intakes you all have and what works. I'm not looking to spend a fortune on it, but I want some advice on what works for you guys. I have heard a lot about Scotty and a couple of others and just wanna hear it from you that have them. Thanks in advance!!!

Get the Volant

I just picked one up for my Old Man for less than 275. 00 bucks on ebay at Southern Hotrod. It includes all new plumbing and I doubt it is really more restrictive than the more expensive other ones. It looks stock, has an enclosed cold air box, build quality is great, and includes a torque tube. I just don't think you can beat it for the money. They haven't taken off like the AFE's or others but then again the dealers make good money if they sell an air filter for 600 bucks. Just my opinion but I did lots of research and have been happy with my purchase. Put the money in something that will get you some HP or help your transmission.

If you aren't going to be adding fuel, why worry about adding more air?

Bob

I just ordered two 4" 90's ,two clamps and a short piece of 4" pipe from airflowonline.com to make the "torque tube" put the AFE stock replacement air filter in and cut the front of the air box out and it works great. You do have to cut about an inch and a half off of the elbow to connects to the turbo for the offset. Also if your familar with nashville Tennessee Filter Sales carries everything but the pipe and i have some pipe to spare.

I agree with Bob 4x4, I have the AFE intake system and torque tube. I don't plan to add a fueling box and am putting the stock airbox and filter back on.

I read the post from the guy in Alaska who damaged his engine with the AFE. I think with the stock system, if anything happens, you will have less problems with warranty issues.

As far as air goes, the factory box is pretty good as a cold air system, although the paper element restricts flow somewhat when driving in the rain (check your filter minder after a trip in the rain and you'll see what I mean), and the factory plumbing feeding the turbo is a gauntlet of accordians and baffles. That said, any restrictions in either the intake or exhaust side will contribute to turbo lag, which I felt was most noticeable to me having come from a 7. 3L Banks turbo'd Ford.

After mild intake upgrades (and a full exhaust), the turbo spools instantly and hits hard, even running the BDDL in stock mode. I use a cool blue hose to eliminate the factory airbox-to-turbo plumbing with an AFE PG7 drop-in. I can easily put the factory filter back in if I need to for service.

You're not necessarily adding more air, just making it easier for the turbo compressor to move it. Even with stock fueling, intake and exhaust work will contribute to turbo response and fuel economy. Even though an FI engine, they can still suffer from pumping losses.

Here ya go. http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/air1

I chose this hose because it's construction is very similar to compressor ducting used on jet engines and is very heat tolerant. It also allows the use of an air straightener at the turbo inlet. This hose makes it super easy to change your oil filter as well... only 2 band clamps to remove.

I think I read that intake/exhaust mods could actually defuel the motor without a boost fooler.
I couldn't say for sure but it seems unlikely due to the sheer lack of sensors on these engines. I performed my intake/exhaust mods before adding a box and drove it for several weeks like that. The truck felt stronger and guage indications were similar to stock. Considering that airflow mods act more to reduce EGT's than anything else I couldn't see why the ECM would need to defuel. I'm only speculating though based on what I klnow about OBD II gassers... maybe someone else knows that for sure.

Isn't the amsoil filter the same material as the donaldson powercore filters?

I beleive it is the same material, which is a synthetic "nanofiber". each fiber is less than 1 MICRON in size.

Guys/girls,

I just installed a scotty 5 in my 05. I have to admit i noticed a differnce in get up and go... ... ... I am not crasy either i inted on putting it on a dyno with and without to put it on paper. It sounds cool too

I got the AFE 2 - 7. Noticed no diference except for the sound, worth every penny just for that. What happened to the guy in Alaska? I have heard no probs with the Afe. Please fill me in if I'm hurting my motor... engine...
