Hello to everyone,

This past week of one thing going wrong with the Dodge after another, we almost had to have it towed home by a Carrier bearing that decided to go out! The fun began when we got the truck to a reputable shop in town. They told us that they could not find a new bearing for the truck. None of the part numbers they had in their books were accurate. They then decided to begin calling heavy truck repair shops around the state of Oh. to try to locate a replacement. To make a very long story short, the new bearing was located across the state. The shop sent someone after it, and it was installed this afternoon when they are not normally open.

We are curious to know, are these a common problem of the Dodge trucks? I have done a search hear on the TDR and have found almost nothing of these going bad. Hopefully this does not lead into other problems down the road.

PS. Ironically, the truck had exactly 100,000 miles on the Odometer when it went out!

A carrier bearing let go and it didn't mess anything else up in the differential?

Agreed.

Usually you replace all the bearings as a kit... if the shop had a problem finding the bearings, I'd find a new shop as the dana rear is about the most common one and easy to find bearings for.

My carrier bearing went out at about 135000 miles. My local NAPA and carquest both had them in stock. I went on TDR and a few said that if I don't put a mopar part in it I will be repacing it soon again. So I called my local dealer and they had one in stock. It took about 30 min to put in and nothing went wrong with the diff. I would find a new shop to take your truck.

I think he is talking about the drive shaft carrier bearing. This is just a guess, based on the singular,"carrier bearing" not plural, "carrier bearing's".

Hello to all,

Yes, it was the drive shaft carrier bearing. it was an easy thing to replace once they were able to find one. I'm not sure why the problem with finding the replacement. That's just the story that I got, which was told to me by second hand.

Sorry for any confusion!

Replaced mine at 108000. Went bad 40 miles from home. Was able to limp home under 35 mph. Long ride home, though. Dealer needed three days to get. Bought after market and now at 165000 miles. So I don't think that only the dealer's carrier bearing will hold up. There are three or four bearing manufacturers, just re badged for consumer.

Mark,

It's OK, :) I knew what you were talking about. Everyone I've ever talked to in the drive line business calls them "carrier bearings". Rear diff carrier bearings are just that, "rear diff carrier bearings".

I guess you guys have never heard of a hose pipe, either. :-laf :-laf

Hey Farmhauler,

Just out of curiousity, what were the symptoms before the Hanger/carrier/Driveshaft bearing let go? I have been searching for an intermiitent vibration in my truck. When I load the drivetrain, then let off, and load again, sometimes I get a vibration at highway speeds, even with the converter locked in O/D. I thought it was tires, but it goes away intermittently at same speeds. I yanked up & down on it, but it doesn't seem to move much (1/8" with rubber bearing holder).

I appreciate any feedback, as I'm leaving for a 5'er haul 1000 miles to Myrtle Beach shortly.

I was rebuilding the rear diff on my Jeep just this weekend so I have that on my mind. It's carrier bearings and pinion bearings... people don't call them rear diff carrier bearings :-laf

I dont know about anyone else. But when my bearing went it sounded like big truck turbo whissle every time I let of the fun pedal or down shifted. I thought I lost a syncro, in the transmission. I had no vibration or any thing else. It pushed the drive shaft forward into the transfer case and was leaking transfer case fluid pretty good out of the rear seal. But if you have some drive line vibration dont count it out different trucks do different things.

Only the long bed have the support bearing right? My truck doesn't have one.

Long bed, quad cab/extended cabs IIRC... my longbed/std cab is a single piece shaft.

And yes, a carrier bearing is a carrier bearing... the one he is talking about is known as a center support bearing.

Sure do. It's a Federal Mogul Bearings. Part # HB-88107B. I have a 95 ext. cab but I'm pretty sure the carrier bearings are all the same. I anyone knows different please speak up, cause I really not current with the newer models. :)
