I have checked the archives since I asked the last question regarding EGT's and could not find any posts that answered the question.

I have a Jacobs ram brake on my 3500 which is set up for pulling a 5th wheel. (Just ordered a 30' Jayco). .

I have figured, now that it was pointed out that EGT's are important, that the E-brake actually works by restricting the exhuast fumes from leaving the engine. ( Correct me if I'm wrong)

This sounds like it would cause the EGT's to go sky high... The last thing i want to do is be coming down "White Bird" grade on US 95 in Idaho and have a engine melt down. .

How much or does the jacob ram brake cause EGT's to go up, and how long would be safe to use it not having a EGT guage in the truck just yet?

Got a ton of gizmo's to buy and the EGT guage will be one of the first. Thanks in advance.

Bug Out,

When you are using an e-brake you are at idle as far as the fuel system is concerned. So since you are not burning any fuel or hardly any there is no way that the EGT can be very high. If the thing sticks (as I just found out) and you pour it on the EGT will get up there all right. No real worry about that, I have had mine for over 100K miles and it did that once (vacuum valve stuck). Even then it didn't get high enuff to be a problem.

One thing, when you idle to cool down turn the brake off or it will take a while to get down to 300.

Bugout,

You are correct that the Jacobs exhaust brake works by restricting the exhaust flow. However, your EGT's will NOT go "sky high" when you engage the exhaust brake because your fuel delivery must be at the engine idle rate (i. e. , no throttle) before the brake will engage. My maximum EGT (post turbo) with the brake engaged is about 500F.

You can keep the brake engaged for as long as necessary without causing harm to the engine.
