My question is about how long the engine cranks sometimes. Once in awhile it'll fire off almost instantaneously, sometimes it'll crank for a full 3 seconds. My buddies '98 12 valve fires so fast he barely touches the key. Does this have to do with electronics, crank position, rail pressure, all of the above?? Could someone please clarify this for me. Thanks

Yes you answered your own question.

I think and I may be wrong but the new engines and all the sensors. The engine has to spin in order for the computer to find TDC and then send a message to the injectors to fire. That is what takes the time. Sometimes you are closer to TDC than others.

If I am wrong someone will chime in.
