I am doing an OIL cooler replacement on a friends 1992 W250. While we are there, I am going to do the Killer Dowel Pin check and tab. I ordered all parts for the oil cooler and front timing cover gasket from Cummins. The timing cover gasket is the metal type. What type of sealants are recommended for this gasket and for the oil cooler? I bought some non hardening Permatex gasket maker. Any other recommendations?

Lots of people just put them on dry. If you do use some sealant on the front cover gasket make sure to only use enough to skim coat the gasket, just enough to hold it in place. If you use too much it can squish out and get all over the inside of the cover and get on gear and other items. If the oil cooler gaskets have what Cummins calls a "print o seal", a reddish orange bead of sealant, then don't put any thing on it at all.
BTW the Cummins p/n for their sealant is 3164067

Thanks David. My plan for the skim coat was the same as your suggestion. I appreciate the back up. Just needed to find out what type of sealant. I thought about Copper Coat or this non hardening permatex.

I used the non-harding when I done my dowel pin cause I already had it and sounded good to use it.

I used the same today. Have a guy down the street that works at a dealership and that is what they use. It was nice to see this engine with 216,000 miles on it that the Killer Dowel Pin had only migrated out a little bit.
