Minimum bed rail clearance?

Heading up to Fun Valley and Wolf creek CO

I was in Oregon this last weekend and saw that they pump your gas for you. Just curious... what is up with that?? Not that I give a crap one way or the other, but just wondering what is behind this practice... do the officials think folks are too dumb, some employment lobby pushing for minimum wage jobs??? The fact that is MANDITORY makes me wonder.

oregon

Theyve been doing that forever. I think it had something to do with makeing jobs. But I cant see where that kind of a job would pay enough money to make it worthwhile. They could probably have cheaper gas if they would join the rest of the world and let us pump our own.

I grew up in Oregon. Supposedly it is a safety issue, but I think it is just that the majority of Oregon residents would rather pay to have their gas pumped for them than get out in the rain to do it. By the way, you can pump your own diesel.

It's a Fire Marshall thing all about safety. We're to stupid (Lazy) to pump our own gas but it's legal to pump your Diesel (but don't try it). We have had it on the Ballot to vote to change it but it always gets turned down. So we pay a little more at the pump and somebody (Kid) gets a Min. Wage job.

Well you guys are partly right about being a saftey issue. Oregon & one other state I think on the east coast won't let you pump your own gas at a station. It has to do with putting up a bond for Insurence. If you are a buisness (commercial) & use 200 gallons a month or more you can pump your own gas or diesel at a commercial card or key lock. I get asked that all the time when I'm at a station delivering gas & there is a card lock out behind the station. The fire marshals put up a big stink about motorcycleist wanting to pump their own gas. Myself & a bunch of my Abate buddies wrote letters to the F. M. & they have backed off & revised it to as long as the attendent is standing nearby & hands you the hose.

"it's legal to pump your Diesel (but don't try it)"

I've driven through Oregon many times with a diesel and never knew that. Do you mean in a "truck stop" or does that apply to a regaler servace station?

I used to live in Oregon. The funny thing about the comment " do they think we are to stupid to pump our own gas?" is that I know allot of kids who have grown up in Oregon and they don't know how to pump there own gas when they go out of state the first time  :-laf :-laf

From the State Fire Marshall Office, I know it goes way back to the first fuel pumps.

The east coast state you're refering to is New Jersey. A couple'a years ago I was in NYC and drove to the Jersey side and was surprised I couldn't pump my own gas. I had been to Oregon before that time, so the concept wasn't entirely new to me. Seems kinda silly.

It is really kind of sad... I had a guy that was in his 40's approach me at the pump because he didn't really know what to do - when I saw his Oregon plates it all made sense.

I pump my own diesel whenever I'm in Oregon. The pump jockey knows that it's ok and hands me the nozzle without any objection.

I grew up (kind of) in Oregon and pumped gas at a few stations in high school. It used to suck having to argue with people from out of state that they could not pump their own gas. When I did it we had full service IE. check under the hood, and regular service just pumping the fuel.

I always forget and half the time end up having the pump going by the time the kid gets outa the shack. They understand when they see the plates and take over the pump.

It's funny that a 15 year old girl ( not that that matters ) can pump gas for you even though she doesn't know how to drive, and a 85 year old woman,in Seaside Or. , until she retired and couldn't drive could pump gas. All they needed was a 30 minute show and tell on how to pump gas. And it's not legal for them to pump gas into their own car unless they are working.

Oregun is the slowest state in the west at 65 mph max. and 30 mph over any posted speed limit will get your license pulled for 6 months.

It's almost time for me to live somewhere else.

Dave

Yea, not only are we too dumb to pump our own gas but we're too dumb to drive over 55 on a major hwy. Here in central Or. we have a 4 lane major hwy posted 55. We might hurt ourselves if they set the limit at 70 like most other states. Then top it with what they call the "Basic rule" which says we can in spite of the posted 55 drive to the conditions of the road, meaning if you have a nice day out & not much traffic you can most likely get away with 70. So what we get is some old granny that thinks she has to drive 55 and the rest of us who want to drive 70 & a big mess.

But hey, we don't have a SALES TAX!!

There, I feel better already. :{

I wish every state would yank your license for doing 30 over the limit. Morons around here kill somebody every week on the highway cause they just cant wait to get where their going or they like the sound of that fart can on their ricer.

they do the same thing in New Jersey. and lets not forget those dam yankee road tolls.

they nickel dime you to death up there! and their road salt rots all the trucks to junk in short order... ... ... I am glad I rarely have go north!

Amen to that! Recently here in California the highway patrol instituted a zero tolerance for any speeding for a period of 24hrs. Speeding tickets went up to 2000 from 400 in one day. But guess what? Everybody else arrived on time just staying in the same lane and abiding by our already generous speed limit. As in most instances if the gov. enforced existing laws more, there would be no need for additional laws.
