How Does A Siren Work?

Anyone go to the Dover race??

It was stated on the discovery channel last night that the PT boat engines were 12 cylinder gasolene engines. I was born in the early fifties but I am certain that they were Packard diesels? Anyone able to back me up on this?

Everybody's Right

They used both 12 cyl. gasoline (avgas) Packards and Allisons. THREE of 'em Oo. 60+ mph. 80 footers' hulls were 3/4" plywood mfd. by Huckins. Anyboby remember the Fairform Flyers?? (No it wasn't a bra :D ) Maybe somebody else built some hulls, too; like M1 Garands were built by Springfield, Winchester and International Harvester  , the guvmint sourced wherever it could.

When I was in highschool ('50s) some guy down at the local yacht club had a converted surplus PT - 3 Packards. Name of the boat was "Zipper". He would run down the shoreline parallel to the beach at full tilt and you could hear that thing all over town. What a blast. Unforgettable. Like a low pass by 3 P-51s.

The Packard looks very much like the Allison, supercharged etc. Was it built by Packard from Allison design??? bg

Packard and Allison

I dunno.

I was really into PT boats when I was a ute... as a matter of fact I still think they're cool. I remember reading that some had Allisons and others (most, I think) had Packards. I don't recall the exact numbers on fuel consumption but, as you can imagine, they sucked up gas big-time - limited range.

Also, re: the hulls, I think Huckins designed it, maybe built some, and others may have been built by The Wooden Boat Co. I could be way off on this recollection but it sticks in my mind for some reason. I used to read "Motor Boating" magazine from the late forties up and Huckins ads touted PT boats as one of their accomplishemnts. As I said, I could be off my a$$ on all this... age and stress, ya know.

Anybody remember the movie in which The Duke Oo. played a PT boat skipper? Go rent it if you want to hear what they sounded like. Go rent it even if you DON'T CARE what they sounded like. Those were the days.

My . 30 M1 Carbine was built by Underwood Typewriter Co.

I loved watching McHale's Navy. Wondered if they were using surplus PT boats.

Saw last week where some of PT-109 has been found.
