I just took possession on my 97 5 speed. I've noticed that I can run it up to 3000 rpms. On my 3/4 ton I could only get up to about 2500 and that was it. Is the 5 speed set up different. I don;t know who the previous owner is so I can't ask him. However, the safety wire on the tamper seal over the high idle screw is gone and you can tell an allen wrench has been used on the star wheel cover. Man, I love this new truck, I can run it up to 105.

I am Bosch and ADS Diesel Injection Certified. All you need to do to get more rpm's from the engine on the P7100 is to make an adjustment to the two governor weights or even better, replace the springs with the BD power kit. It is worth ten times its price in gold.

B59 is absolutely correct. I had my governor adjusted by a competent pump shop which gave it the potential to rev higher. Later, I added an ATS exhaust manifold which gave it the ABILITY to rev higher. I started at 2200 rpm's and ended up at 3000 rpm's. Bear in mind the later pumps are set from the factory to run at higher rpm's than the earlier pumps.

My 96 would turn 3000 stock. It now turns 4200 after Dave Mitchell got ahold of it.

I believe 3600 rpm is the cut of point on stock engines. If your stock engine can spin that fast. Usually stock engines can get barely to 3000. But Governor is set at 3600.

Starting in 1996, Cummins set the engine speed a little higher to help reach the New HP rating (215). This was on 5speeds only. Very normal to see 3000. Especailly in lower gears. If you see it in 5th you have a good running motor.

I can redline mine in 5th gear in a petty short amount of time. I think it's been played with but not sure because I bought it from a car lot.
