Is the question relative to mounting the cooler or to mounting the fan? In any case, the air must flow with the direction of vehicle travel. Mount the cooler wherever it has to be and put the fan so that it runs with the air flow from moving down the road. Am I missing something here and making this harder than it should be? Are you having to mount the cooler in a remote location?
Not sure how the factory SD cooler works, but my aftermarket Flex-A-Lite pushes air through. If you wanted I uess you could reverse the leads and see which way works better.
If you are referring to the HD transmission cooler that was ordered with the "93" CTD, they are mounted under the front of the bed on the driver's side. These suck the air in from below through the cooler by way of a plastic fan on top. The Cooler is mounted "factory" horizontal. My old "93" was a great truck.
