Wierd Trailer Hitch - What Is It?

A little off topic, but do companies like Horizon allow you to just work seasonally and or carry passangers while transporting? I've often considered picking up some extra work during the summer months while I'm not at my regular job and the wife and I love to travel. Most years, we could run much of June, July and August.

Dick Trombley answered your question about seasonal work with Horizon. Horizon requires you to haul at least one trailer each month because they are carrying all their drivers on a group commercial liability policy which costs them money whether you are hauling or not.

Other transport companies have different rules and would probably allow you to work seasonally only.

If the company is aware of and approves a passenger such as your wife it is probably okay. I think Horizon had a few drivers whose wives road along but I don't remember for sure and don't know what details might apply.

Quality Transport, STAR Transport, and others operate in the same area doing similar work.

I was in Horizon's yard in Goshen last week picking up one of our units. The road going east out of Goshen has transport yards on both sides... ... ... ..... all loaded with trailers waiting for someone to hook on and deliver.

In those memorable words of Bo Pilgrim, "It was a mind boggling thang. "

Our company pays us $1. 60 per mile outbound and $1. 20 inbound on a turn around. (bringing the customer's trade back to the dealership) Or if we triangulate, $1. 60 per loaded mile.

I am not a transporter as such. I am the outside buyer for the company. When I buy a unit, if we feel like it, we haul it to the dealership to save one of the trucks from having to come get it and keeps them free to do deliveries.

In this day and age, running empty one way works about as well as that old lady out in West Texas that took a scissors and tried to cut the hole out of her blanket.

There is a dark side, when diesel was $5. 25 a gal. , I hauled my first and last RV transport. 500 plus miles, ONE WAY, only to get orders to return for another RV to be delivered to the same dealer. Of coarse you don't get paid for dead heading, I refused the load, it ended up costing me more money than earned and wear and tear. Not to mention the RV had a brake issue and cost me a weekend stay in Saltlake due to late delivery. There are other issues that left a bad taste in my mouth but they are personel issues I won't go into.

Been there, done that, and not doing it again.
