I just installed a SRT hood on my truck. I'm looking into modifying the SRT ram air to connect to my air box.

My question is..... has anyone done this already ? If you have, what is to stop water from entering the air box?

if you haven't, what did you do to prevent water from pouring into the engine while driving in the rain ?

anyone know of any aftermarket scoop inserts for the SRT hood ?

I have an SRT hood and have been wondering the same things. In the November '06 issue of DIESELPOWER, there is an article on page 155 called Silly Boys. The truck in the article has an SRT hood with molded ducting to the airbox, page 158. It doesn't say anything about it in the article tho.

Where did you guys order your hood from? And what did you do with the old hood. I am thinking about getting the SRT hood for mine also. Thanks!

there is a ram air for the SRT hood. Volant makes it but, I don't know if just the

ram air box and tube can be purchased without buying the whole CAI.

I purchased my hood from... . Ram Air Hood

You have the option of getting it painted or not. All they need is the paint code from your truck.

The pic they have for the diesel is of a gasser?

yes, it is. That intake is for a SRT as is the hood. There would likely be some

modifying to the tube to make it fit into a CTD air box.

Don't even know if it's will work but, I'd like to try. I'm doubting they will

sell the just ram air and tube by themselves though, all that extra air would be sweet.

I've been considering an SRT Hood myself, I think my truck is getting more than enough air as it is, I would be more interested in routing the air directly over the exhaust manifold and turbo, in hopes of lower EGT's. If the rain water doesn't effect the durability of the V10 in the SRT/10 Ram, I'm sure it won't harm the operation of the mighty 5. 9 Cummins engine as well.

If you've got a turbo (which the Cummins has) is the RAM air really necessary???? Except for maybe pulling in stlightly cooler air which will end up getting super heated thru the turbo, what is your real intended purpose/gain? (Not trying to get into a debat, just curious?).

EDIT: I thought of doing the SRT10 hood also but for looks only. I don't feel the RAM AIR helps and not worth the effort to get it operational.

I would have to agree with NJT.

People a lot smarter than me are going to have to weigh in on this but, would pressurizing the airbox help at all? Or would the extra air be better used keeping things cool under the hood.

My only concern with dumping the air over the very hot turbo and exhaust manifold would be driving through a rain storm!

How much water/rain would really get in the 2"x 8" maybe 10" hole at 35-65 mph? Im guessin not much. Im guessin the dynamics of the flat front end take care of most of the air/rain. I may be wrong I dont know, maybe Ive just been watchin nascar to much.

I wouldn't say it's necessary. It just seemed to me to more cold air you get into the air box, the more you're pushing through the turbo.

This is all in the name of custom mods only. I like buying things to bolt onto my truck but, sometimes even the manufacturers mods need modding. I bought the hood for looks with no intention of making the ram air usable. Once I got it on though..... the light bulbs started flickering ;-)

I would have to assume quite a bit would end up in the engine compartment. I know a lot of you guys are out west and it doesn't rain much but, here in the east, especially where I live... . it's raining all the time. No, it probably wouldn't be detrimental to the engine but, it doesn't need to be in there and if you're like me and try to keep your engine clean... that makes it a *****.

I'm not real concerned about it. I just thought I'd join in on the forum with what seemed to be a legitimate question :D

I hear you! This is what gets me in trouble all the time! :)

The SRT10 hood is sweet looking though. Wonder if I'll ever get around to buying one, getting it painted and installed!

SRT-10 hood

I have this hood and early on I was on a quest to make it a real ram air. I installed air flow sensors at the hood opening and various places in the air intake. I was concerned as many of you with water coming in the hood opening. I have driven in deluge rain storms and zero water comes in at highway speeds. Why,... I haven't a clue, but it doesn't. Further, the sensors show next to nothing as far as increased air flow at the hood opening,... go figure. There is much more air flow coming in the air box,... it's been about two years ago since I did all this so I don't recall the numbers, but basically even if you could engineer an air pickup from the hood opening similar to the Volant unit then you're still wasting your time and also putsing with yourself if you think you will get better air flow,... NOT!

Face it,. . as did I,... it's for looks. Period. Lots of compliments but functional it's not.
