Carlton, I've got an 03 6spd. with dlr. installed Jacobs E-Brake. It was installed Jan. 21. It is working great. but has started chirping when I disengage it. It sounds almost like the belt chirp on some earlier models, but louder. I was to dlr. today, and a tech. tried some spray lube on it, but did no good. Whats the problem?? I really don't like the loud noise, and I'm afraid it will lead to some problems later on. TIA

Larry,

Do you have the new altenator bracket? If not check your old one for hairline cracks. The cracks will probably be rusty and realitvly easy to see with the help of a flashlight.

A number of members had a chirp/squeal when the e-brake activated (mine included), they all had cracked altenator brackets. The noises ceased when the brackets were replaced.

Yes, I have the new brkt. Fireman, thanks. It sure sounds like a belt chirp, but tech. said its the butterfly, like its sticking, and then squeaks when closing.

Larry,

This is not an issue I've heard of before. I'm not sure what component would be squeaking when the brake is turned off. If it can be reproduced at idle, the tech should be able to locate the source of the sound. It could be coming from the canister on the brake. The vacuum line could be disconnected from the brake and plugged. If there no sound when turning the brake on an off, then it is most likely the brake canister. If the sound is still there, more troubleshooting will be required. Hope this helps.

What should be done if it is the cannister?

They know nothing about the brake. Doesn't Jacobs send a trouble shooting guide to the dlrs?

Y. Bear, Mine makes the same chirping noise while disengaging. I don't know if it does it all the time though.

Does your E-brake switch rattle/buzz. I have a rubber band around the switch to stop the annoying sound it makes.

Mine was buzzing and I just tightened the set screw and that fixed it. I think the squeal was from the belt. I love this quiet engine, but you can sure hear everything else.

My switch doesn't rattle, and the chirp isn't from the belt. When its ideling, I can switch it on and off, and every time I turn it off it chirps, or squeaks. Like I said, a tech. listened to it and said it was not the belt, its coming from the brake.

My shifter switch on my 00 rattled, but this one that came with the brake hasn't yet.

I notice the same sort of sound on mine when I turn it off. I think it just the sudden release of pressure when it releases. I have not worried about it, actually I kind of like the sound. Mine has been doing this for quite a while and is still working great. The noise is more pronounced when RPMs are up thus that is why I think it is just a pressure release.

The vacuum release could definitely be the cause of the chirp. On the vacuum solenoid, there is a hole on the bottom. When the brake disengages, the vacuum that closes the brake is vented to atmosphere, and air is pulled into the solenoid and to the vacuum canister on the brake. This air rushing into the vacuum solenoid could be the cause of the sound.

WAT, now our brakes need a "silencer ring"???

Ho, hum, another MAJOR problem with the MIGHTY CUMMINS ;) that the f**d bozs will be "laugh-linking" about.
