question for people in the northeast

A general question, although not 100% diesel related. I ws wandering if anyone from upstate new york, vermont, new hampshire, or maine could fill me in what it's like to live there( mostly the cost of living) It appears I am goint to be corporate downsized so I was looking for a new adventure. Are there family sustaining jobs, currently I am a mechanic for an electric utility, with past mechanic experience in a scrap yard, also have machinery and truck driving skills. I am familiar with the logging business also. I am from Wisconsin so I believe weather and terrain should be similar. any input would be appreciated. thanks
