when you drive in wet weather do the sides of your bed have soot stains on them? a friend of mine just installed them on his driftwood colored truck that makes just minor black smoke and after the rain dries the sides of the bed are a mess. his pipes are cut flat on the top,,just wandering if the flaired pipes do the same? my 01 produces some major soot when it's towing and being light colored might turn me against installing them.

I haven't had that problem with mine. They are 5", curved tips, angled outward about 45 degrees and projecting above the cab only about 1". What has happened a couple of times is after washing it and starting it, it will "burp" water and soot out on the side. I think if I drill some 1/8" drain holes in the bottom, that would fix it. For a picture, see the "White Lightning" gallery in readers rigs.

I know the local log truck guys only put stacks on their trucks have have 45deg. tip-outs at the top for that reason. Other wise any rain or condensation will spew out at start up and make a mess much like you are describing. Usually the tip-outs take care of that by keeping the crud away from the paint.

i see now why my buddies stacks make such a mess. they are over 6" above the cab and straight pipe catching all the wind. his also dont fit close to the bed corners,,probably 8" or so from the bed side. he did have a shop custom make a cross-over pipe under the truck to feed the left stack but it's only 3" pipe feeding 4" stacks.

Soot

Hey Iceman,I've got the soot problem too. And with a white truck it really shows up. I'm still running those straight stacks that are cut on an angle(freebies). I'm dropping hints for the correct curved stacks for Christmas tho:D . I'm hoping these will alleviate the problem. I don't have to worry about an R. V. either, all I've got are flatbeds. And I know yours smokes way more than mine does:) ,for now;) . Doug

roadking

I have been debating on the using the "ching ching" rain caps on my 97 (see sig). But I don't know how the wind will effect them. At work we use them on all of our equipment from the little cat 3176's to the cat 3512's to the 16v-2 stroke detroit diesel's and when they idle it sure sounds cool:)D ching ching ching:D ). Anyone have any ideas, thanks.

5" Stacks Say No to Soot

Iceman Black paint and I don't see any soot :D :D :D

With the 5" curved stacks I don't see any soot.

Doug any pictures of your stacks yeat :)

How do you like the sound

Well, I have only one six inch stack but yes, with the step 5 injectors and white paint, I get the soot shower at every start up. No big deal ( if the windows are up) as the soot just blows off if the body is dry, if it's wet, then it sticks like glue and the truck needs a bath in short order. Small price to pay for the performance of the injectors and the looks/sound/shock value of the stack.
