I'm not really sure how to adjust the carb on my chainsaw. I can twist the screws and make it scream but how do I tell if I am making it to lean? If i get a small engine tach and adjust it to a certain (what the manual says_ RPM does that mean I'm safe. I don't want to burn another saw up. I had one mess up the cylinder. I don't know if it was me or if it was the 500plus ranks of wood that it had cut.

Thanks Scott

I usually

I will bring it to top RPM and then screw it in around a eigthth of a turn, then go to my idle mixture, and smooth it out then that same eighth of a turn. . I used to have a old Mucculoch that I would have to adjust every tank of fuel, I now have Stihl... . :D

As said above open her up wide open and adjust to maximum RPM,then let her idle and smooth out the idle with the idle screw. If you change 2 cycle oil or mixture you need to adjust the carb again.

This is a good rule to follow and/or the manual. Had the same husky 480 for 20 years and only had to put in a carb kit, fuel and oil hose's and plugs in that time. Also use a good brand of 2 stroke oil and you shouldn't have any problems.

Oh and a old fallers trick, use a chain file one size smaller then what is recommend, you'll like the results. Cut's a lot better. :D

while holding it at full throttle, turn the "high" screw counterclockwise (rich) until the engine starts firing once every OTHER stroke and then close it slowly until the engine returns to normal firing. leave it there. this will keep you at maximum richness without loosing power. the "low" idle should be only rich enough so that when you come off idle quickly to full throttle, the engine does not "bog" or hesitate. use a combination of idle speed adjustment and idle mixture to get the desired idle speed.

i repair small engines (2 & 4 cycle) as a side business and this method has served me well for the last 30+ years.

hope this helps
