I just installed my #8 plate in my stock 96 with auto.

What a differnce in power!!!!. My question to the group is what is best to set the plate using the star wheel. (plate is in stock postion)

Right now the truck has much better acceleration, (have not messed with the wheel as yet) but blows a lot of smoke when I first step on it, after a second or so the smoke stops as the accleration continues. Is this normal based on what the group has experience with their initial setup.

Any suggestion on how to set this plate up for max power with acceptable pyro temps would be appreciated.

TST installed and set mine. same smoke symptoms. not a problem. i don't think he touched my star wheel. i was standing right there when he did it... .

i don't screw around with it much. i just drive it. it's a truck. it hauls crap. i have 2 kids.

R Little, keep the plate in the stock position for EGT control, Mark (TST) says to push the AFC all the way forward then test drive it to see if you like the spool-up, bottom like is smoke is heat and that's what spool's the turbo. Try giving the star wheel 5 click's at a time toward the motor and go test drive it and see if you like the smoke verses spool-up. Nice to know you have a guy close (Fred Swanson) that can get or do anything to your truck.

Thanks for the information on how to set my #8 plate. The AFC is in the stock position from what I know and the truck is stock except for gages and K&N filter.

I will try messing with the star wheel a little to see what affect this will have on the smoke and accleration.

I plan to do some other things to this truck but I was not sure who here in Phoenix area could help me. JFulmer you mention a guy that was in my area that maybe could help me. Any chance of getting more information on this contact.

Thanks

P. M. Fred Swanson and find out where he is located in the city, I just know his shop is in Phoenix, He does just about everything from what I know of him from the TDR.

I've got the #8 plate, and what I did was spun it all the way towards the front of the engine and tried it there. I thought that the wheel controlled the amount of fuel delivered(one way gave it more smoke other gave it less). I don't think that is true. I have been playing with it for a while and the more I screw it in or towards the rear Ilike it better. It smokes less when shifting, It is more responsive at the lower rpms and the turbo spools up quicker. I just don't know when too much is too much. Can I do damage adjusting it too far or will performance eventually be affected to let me know if I have adjusted it too far? I do not have any guages yet ,that will be my next couple hundred. I am a poor boy with a new toy:( . Let me know if I am hurting my engine buy fooling around with it too much.

Usally you get better low end response with the star wheel towards the front of the engine. Less tension on the spring gives you quicker fuel response, and possibly more smoke. When you turn the star wheel towards the firewall, you are delaying fuel till you build some boost. You won't hurt anything with it there, but it could impede AFC link travel @ full boost.

Get some gauges first. Then get TST's AFC spring kit. You can experiment with the different springs and star wheel position. It's almost limitless.

I have the Same truck you do. I dynoed @ 387hp/907 ft lbs. There is more left in it too. :D
