got some more question(s) (what else?) :)



i've got 265 tires all around now, and they are getting old and i'll need to be replacing them soon, so how big can i go, was told that with larger than 245's & a 3. 55 rear end ,mileage will decrease? and what are good mud tires for the rear that wear well?

definitly a 285. you can get tons of different tread designs in that size. the "mud" tire is all in how you use it, a mud tire to me is a bogger, but to you it might not be. the best all around tire imo is the bfg at. or the mt.

milage shouldnt be much different than stock with that tire.

255/85r

If you are mounting on factory wheels, you might consider 255s as they are a 33" tire but are not that wide so they work well with our skinny rims. Most are a Load Range D but they still have a 3000 load rating which is only 40 pounds less then the factory 245s in a E.

I found that I get better milage with 285 over 265's, about 1mpg. The 3. 55's and the 285's seem to lower the rpms enough to put it right in the torque band. (this is with a 5spd)
 
I just put on a set of 285s after the stock 265s wore out. I have noticed it does have lower RPMs but higher EGTS by about 100* I think that is just the motor using a little more fuel for the speed. I dont know. But I love the look - I should say they way it should have come from the factory.



But I have a long haul coming up so we will see how the increase effects MPG.

I just put on a set of 305/70/16 Nitto Terra Grapplers. They are load range E and look very nice on the 16x8 factory alloys. I had 285s before and they looked and rode great. These are essentially the same diameter but a little wider. I have 4:10s so I don't have a comparison for you on the mileage. So far the Nittos ride awesome. There are not many E rated tires available. That's why I went with these.
 
I went from 245 to 285 and I did not notice a change in my mileage. You have to correct for the speedometer error when you calculate your mpg. If you don't, the mpg #'s will go down, since the odometer will read less miles with the taller tires.
 
I went from a 245 stock to a 285 and I think I figured about 10% difference in speedomenter reading and actual speed. ie. speedometer says 70, I am really going 77, 80 is 88 etc. . Not sure what the 265 / 285 difference would be but I would guess it to be about 5%. Keep in mind, the 285 will fit under the truck as a spare also (barely). Big O traded a used BFG AT/KO 285 for my 245 Mich spare when I bought the set of new 285's. Important to keep same size spare if you have limited slip diffs. Or you can just cross your fingers and hope you don't get a flat. :eek:
 
I went from the 265's to the BFG 285's. Didnt notice much difference, in MPG even without making adjustments for the speedo. and some shop is always running sells on them. I like'em but just my 0. 02's
 
Either 285's or 305's. I just took off my 285 and put on 305's. Same exact height (32. 6"). The 285's I had were wild cats, rode great lasted forever. I now have nittos, also ride great and are load range E.

Personally, the best "all around tire" is the Toyo M/t. Next, I would have to say goodyear MT/R. then it comes to the BFG MT, the Irok sts, etc. I agree that a mud tire is a bogger. a "normal" mud terrain is really an all terrain, and a all terrain is really a street/sand tire. In my opinion anyways.
 
speedo adjust

I thought I read that Dodge can correct the speedometer when going from 265 to 285's is this true? How do they do it? I don't want them to reflash and screw up all the other issues associcated with a reflash. Anyone have any experience with the speedo correction and any associated problems?
 
That's correct. The factory programmer only has two tire sizes (245/75/16 & 265/75/16) preprogrammed, but a third option lets you input the revolutions per mile so any tire can be used. Recently changed mine to BFG specs at DC dealership, it's accurate to within 2% speedo but dead on odometer at 100 miles (to the tenth of a mile!) compared to a GPS.
 
I have a friend that works at a DC dealership, so it was no charge on a weekend! Friends are wonderful things to take advantage of... Seriously, it only took 10 minutes, maybe a member in your area knows someone. My buddy says they'd probably charge a one hour minimum...
