I am posting this for my dad. In his motorhome(which is powered by an 8. 3 cummins) he has a 10kw generator that is powered by a kubota diesel. Runs fine all that stuff but it blows white smoke all the time. It only has 246 hours on it has a brand new air filter brand new fuel filter and draws fuel from the main 150gal tank. It has an inline style stationary pump fed by a little electric pump. Do you guys have any idea why it smokes? He would take it in but I am sure that they would wave a magic wand and tell him it was fixed and charge him $100 only they would do nothing to it. What do you guys think???????

Normally white smoke means one of three things to me:

1. Extended times between run times= alot of moisture that must be burnt off (white smoke) or

2 Thermostat is sticking open, therefore the moisture that is built up in the muffler is slower to burn off and the fuel air mixture can't be burnt completely or

3 cracked head and or defective gasket allowing antifreeze and water mixture to burn with the fuel mixture.

The smoke I believe is becuase of incomplete combustion like its running rich or like its really cold outside. It uses absolutely no water but I could see the t-stat hanging open and not letting it get up to operating temp, that is definately a possibility. Thanx for the ideas lets keep em flowing.

96 Ford PSD I had would blow white clouds when started in the winter months, till it got warmed up. Ford-Diesel.com guys claimed all did this when started in winter. Ain't had the Ram in cold season yet so don't know myself what it's like. My buddies Ram blows white smoke till it's warmed up in Colorado winters.

does the white smoke smell like unburnt diesel fuel [if it makes your eyes sting/water it probably is ;)] it might be just that... low compression or the engine not being hot enough can cause that. them emd 2 cycles we have at work smoke white real bad when they are cold and they keep smoking like that until they heat up to past 100°f. and the white smoke they make is raw fuel and it burns when it gets in your eyes... :D

I would pull the injectors and have them tested, I've seen the same problem and the injectors were the problem. Just my 2 cents:)

The smaller Kubota diesels are very cold blooded, it probably isn't warming up fully. Could be due to a bad thermostat.

Thanx for all of the input guys at least now I have a starting point to even look at the thing. Its not really that big of a deal but I think that since it only has a few hundred hours on it that something definately is wrong with it. It starts right up and runs fine it just has this light white haze coming from it. Again thanx for the information I really appreciate it.

Sounds like an injector is stuck open. That happened on my MF tractor (Perkins Diesel, mechanical pump) a couple of years ago while idling one cold winter day. The white smoke is usually raw fuel getting into the exhaust system and giving the results you are having. You could try using some Stanadyne or Cummins additive. They provide lubrication for the injectors and may solve your problem. A few revs on my tractor burned the fuel out and the injectors stopped their dripping and all was well on the farm. Hope the same happens for your dad.
