I am new so forgive the stupid questions. I got a used 03 2500 4X4 and I am thinking about putting a new exhaust and air intake kit on my truck. I was wondering if I need to have gauges put on it before the new exhaust and air intake? I know I need to if I put a box on it. But that will be something to do later.

I don't have the tools to put the exhaust on myself. Is there any place around Nashville Tn. that you could suggest going to have it done. Thinks for all your help.

Welcome to TDR. . be selective with the exhaust. Anything you do there will make more noise but if that whats your after than go for it. Just say no to oiled air filters IMO.

You could do gauges after but for sure before you put a box on. Main thing is have fun with it

RD- there's no stupid questions around here... only some interesting ones :) Your's wasn't even interesting. Welcome to the TDR. Lots of good folks out in your area. Guess they turn in early. :D

Welcome to TDR, hold on to your wallet. As for your gauge question it all depends on weither you want them or not, I like them. If you are considering them I probably would get them first and get it over with, then the exhaust and intake, or vise versa, its up to you. The exhaust will make your truck louder for sure, but you wont hear your intake system like the regular gassers, youll more then likely hear the turbo more which I like. Since your from TN, theres a shop that could hook you up.

What is wrong with the oiled air filters Matt400? I have been looking at the MBRP Dual Systems. Does anybody have one on there truck? I have got to say I like the sound of the turbo. I traded my nissan in on this truck. The nissan was 2002 4X4 crew cab and had supercharger on it. You could hear it a little. I have been wanting a big 2500 for a long time. The dodge even gets better mpg than the nissan (15. 5mpg on super ). Oo. And has a lot more room.

As for gauges, the Edge Attitude Monitor looks cool. Dose anybody have one on there 03 and haw do you like it?

Red-Rider thinks for the link.

i just put the mbrp dual on my 05 truck last week, i took the cat off also, sounds great imo, alot louder and deeper

Okay, time for me to weigh in too, my '04 has the AfE filter set-up with the "torque tube". Turbo whistle is WAY-COOL. Well, anyway, it makes just the right sound as you de-cellerate. Not obnoxious, just noticable. Already have the 4"exhaust, but that CAT...

I second doubleclutch here..... same config. I love the turbo whine... What's up Matt?

RD two things... actually three...

First welcome to TDR. Second, you are already thinking mods so the first and most informative would be to do the gauges so you know what your stock readings are before you start to mod. Third, if you are a regular TDR surfer, you'll find that a lot ofthe excellent information to gain here contains raedings for EGT, Boost, Trans Temp etc. Without the gauges you wouldn't be able to compare apples to apples. Plus the gauges are just damn cool to watch anyway. I have a Juice/Att and am even looking into a pod mount to back up (reinforce?) the read outs I am getting from the Attitude.

You'd be getting an EZ at this point in time as Edge doesn't yet have the Juice for your rig. The Attitude supports the Juice module for temps and backdown settings.

It sounds like you are willing to "invest" in toys. Gauges will be insurance should you start "bombing". There are MANY opinions on whether you need gauges or not but if you start messing with above stock HP and torque output you want to know how the mods are effecting your temps so you don't fry your turbo, transmission, etc.

There is a Sh** load of posts in here on this topic. Poke around and you'll learn a lot.

RChamberlain (sp?) has been messing with his lately. Look for his stuff about the EZ.

Matt may have formed his opinion based on this test.

-Ryan :)

Yeah, I remember you posted this when I was pondering the idea of going down that road or not. Today while I was yanking my silencer ring (hee-hee!) I wiped the inside of my torque tube with one of my wife's fancy photography wipes. Not a speck of anything after 4 months with the PG7. So far so good.

Thanks again Ryan!

Oh I suppose its one of those personal things, but since you asked. . I feel the oil catches and traps small dust particles that would just fall off a paper element when the engine is shut down. I had one on a motorcycle that clogged up so tight I had to remove it to get home.

I work in a repair shop and see these filter clogged up big time cuz people put them on and forget about ever cleaning them, TDR folks are a different breed and I am sure keep them serviced.

Speaking of service I feel there is too much room for error such as too little or too much oil, not getting them dry enough after washing or not correctly washing creating combinations of different performance vs changing out a paper element when needed.

Then there is the issue of oil contamination on the air charge temperature sensor, I have not seen one go bad yet however I do see many Ford Mass Air Flow sensors (on gas rigs) damaged from oil mist. I believe TST at one time stated on their site they too don't approve of them, can't find it there anymore but they only sell the paper stuff.

I don't think I saw that report Ryan. . pretty interesting, thanks for the link.

I hear ya'... .

I was planning on getting a second PG7 so I could just swap them out when it was cleaning time. That way there's no urgency to clean it quick and put it back wet just to get it back in the rig.

Excellent idea, you could let it set overnight or longer to air dry, do a nice even coat per the instructions and pop it in a plastic bag for the next time its needed.

Guys, If an 05 already has a 4" exhaust, what benefit do you get from an aftermarket exhaust? Couldn't I just swap the muffler for an open one, leave the cat on, and get a crome tip?? I have a stock motor, will probably get the Edge EZ (or similiar) at some point... .

IMHO, the main advantage to upgraded exhaust on 04. 5 and up is the smile factor... I had a small and rare "metal termite" problem around where my cat used to be :-laf and had Rip Rook install a 34" muff in place of the stocker. Kept the rest of the stock 4" pipe, added a MagnaFlow stainess tip and rolled down the road. Must more aurally aesthetic than stock, it was just too durn quiet for my taste. I did have Rip put a resonantor where the cat was, and that did seem to keep drone to a minimum. Right at 2000 RPM there is a bit of "growl" when you get on it, but if you just cruise below that, it's hard to tell much difference from stock. A big plus if you're spouse isn't so hot on loud exhaust...

One word of caution that I think most members would agree on:

once bit by the BOMBing bug, it is usually terminal and no cure has yet been found
