Hey guys,

I finally received my new 2500 after about 2 months of waiting :) (1/3/05). When I received the truck there were only 9 miles on the clock. There are now 125 miles on the clock now and I am noticing a few things with the engine.

1. The engine sounds like it has a pinging sound - almost like when a gas engine has got some bad fuel or the heads chattering. It was much more noticeable the first day but it has subsided just a little bit but still there. You can hear it when first accelerating through each of the gears and then die down. When I really stomp down and accelerate though the pinging stops.

2. I noticed the oil pressure gauge stay in the middle of the safe zone when driving but when stopped the needle will go to the left edge of the safe zone on the gauge. When you start driving again the needle will go back to the middle of the safe zone. My friend has a Toyota Tundra that does the same thing and is normal but I don't know if this is normal for a CTD 2500.

3. The other concern I have is when I am coming to a stop and I shift into neutral out of a driving gear the tach will bob up and down between 650 rpm and 850 rpm before settling at 750 rpm. The truck does not seem to shudder, lose power, or the lights go dim when this is occurring. We have a couple of 12 valve CTD dodges at work that do not do this - when you shift into neutral the tach will go to about 750rpm and stay - will not bob up and down.

I am not sure if this is normal operation of the new 05's or if the engine just needs to get some more miles on her. I am particularly concerned about the engine ping noise - I know there are some issues with injectors not being tightened or needing to be replaced. I don't seem to notice any pinging while idling or any white smoke at start up. If anybody could shed some light on the subject it would be greatly appreciated. BTW - the truck was assembled on 12/04/04 and it has the old door weatherstrip seals on it that rub against the front corner of the door - you would think DC would put the TSB seals on to begin with instead of the bad seals!!!

Thanks,

Brandon

Brandon: I have a 04. 5 3500 4x2 6-speed. #1) These babies are alot quieter and I believe we are all hearing things we would not normally hear with the 2nd Gen or 12v motors. Mine does seem to have a noticeable type of ping and others have said the same too. #2) The oil pressure guage(from previous posts I have read) is useless and does not show an actual pressure. #3) My revs fluctuate also and has never died or stumbled. I accept it as SOP. I have 19000 miles and only problem is inoperative backup lights which I believe is switch related... I have ordered new switch and when I get a chance I am going to replace it. Dodge wants my truck for half a day to replace it and I am not willing to give it up for half a day for a $65 part.

Brandon,

All you describe is normal.

1. The pinging has something to do with the "3rd event" on the injectors I believe. Someone with a brain can probably explain it better than I ever could. Sounds like the engine is gonna self destruct, but it is normal. I got used to it, you will too.

2. The oil pressure guage is nothing more than a tarted up idiot light. Not a real guage by any stretch. DC probably saved a nickel per truck on this one.

3. The idle bob may have something to do with the injector rail pressure. Something about the high pressure in the rail causes a momentary bump in idle speed until the computer lowers the pressure. Again, someone with a brain can probably help you more than I can. Normal though.

Don't even get me started on the weather strip.

I need more coffee.

Steve

Oh, BTW, welcome to the 3g world. Don'tcha just LOVE the power? Oo.

1. the pinging is due to the fact that the motor is so quite it sounds to me like a gas engine with a ping when it is only the normal combustion on the engine.

2. My oil pressure exhibits the excact pressure flucuations depending on engine RPM.

3. The RPM fluctuation while in in neutral and the vechical still in motion is from the speed sensor still seeing the truck is in motion mine does the same thing when I coast to a stop for turbo cool down.

it takes a while to get used to these 3rd gen trucks, but I will say that these trucks are light years away from the 1st and 2nd gen trucks these 610 motors pull like a bull :-laf.

Brandon: I have on '04. 5, 3500, and ditto to all the above. I have over 10K on mine, since purchase in Sept... just drive her... all SOP.

Thanks for the info guys -I was going crazy worrying about it all. I've been reading these forums every day for the 2 months I've been waiting and read all the horror stories in here! Thanks again for the info - Now if we could just do something about the weatherstrip - I put some grease on the offending area and it didn't help one bit. It is so obvious you would think Dodge quality control would have caught it - especially since there is a TSB replacing the old weatherstrips like the ones on my truck!!!

Thanks again,

Brandon
