A friend of mine want me to "help" (he does the work and I'm on hand for questions/instruction) him change is trans fluid this weekend. How much fluid does the FSM say we need for his 2000 1500 4X4 with a 5. 9 Magnum? My '94 manual refers to the shallow pans and I don't want any surprises. Thanks!

Depends which transmission-

NV 3500 4. 8 pints

NV 4500 8 pints

42 RE 4 quarts

I think those are the only transmissions used on the 1500.

Sorry, it's the auto. Must be the 42 RE. 4 quarts, that sure doesn't seem like much! My 47 RH takes about 10.

Thanks Brian!

Extreme1,

The reason it is such a small amount is because there is no way to drain the torque converter. Changing the transmission fluid changes only about half of it.

In order to change all of it you have to disconnect a line at the cooler, and run the engine with the line disconnected while pouring fresh fluid into the transmission. When you see fresh fluid running out of the disconnected line, you have changed it all. This procedure is not for the faint of heart, and requires two people. If you do this, be sure you don't run the transmission out of fluid -- pour fast.

The line to disconnect is the one that feeds the cooler, not the return line. I don't remember which one it is. Actually, if you disconnect the wrong line, the procedure will still work. You'll just get fluid out of the cooler instead of out of the line.

When I did my 1995 truck, it took about eight quarts of fluid, if I'm remembering correctly.
