I was driving home the otherday over the weekend, when I noticed a woman driving a bone-stock CTD making a very hesitant left hand turn in front of me. As her truck just passed mine it completely quit on her. I pondered for a moment weather to help her push it out of the way of traffic, or pull her with my truck and my tow-strap. I figure my 150 skinny self wouldn't be effective pushing a +7K lbs vehicle, so I rolled my window down and motioned her to stay put, as I would be there to help as soon as my light turned green. I made a U turn, pulled in front of here and hooked up. I pulled her about 1/8 mile and into a parking lot, and asked her if she ran out of fuel. She replied with no, it was running fine then when I went to take off when the light turned green, the truck sputtered, bogged down and died. She said she was able to start it but it only ran for 10 seconds, while still bogging then quit and wouldn't start any longer. Does anyone have any idea what was wrong with her truck just by my description?

Take this for whats it's worth but the dealer told me that the CP3 will run fuel without the lift pump. It's just not good for it. Keep in mind that a service writer told me that.

True, assuming the LP failed in such a way that the CP3 can pull fuel through it. Doesn't always happen that way.

Running with failed lift pump

I could get fuel to the pump but I could not blow fuel thru my pump when it failed. A friend with a pre-'03 found out his lift pump was bad when it wouldn't prime after filter change but it was running when he changed the filter.

I agree. I think the CP3 would pull the fuel if the lift pump didn't inhibit the flow. Mine would crank and run for a few seconds if I cranked on it for a while, but it wasn't getting enough to keep the truck running. When I would open the water/fuel seperator valve, it would sound like it was pulling air back into the filter. So I assume the CP3 was pulling hard enough, just the lift pump was stopping fuel from getting through.

When I took my still functioning stock lift pump off I could not blow air through it (lung pressure). I think it would be a real deterrent to fuel reaching the CP3 if it failed. You may stand a chance of getting some fuel to the CP3 with the stock lift pump bypassed.

lift pump

Dumb question, where is the lift pump on these new trucks? I know my '02 was up on drivers side, back of motor. Now the new ones is it in the tank, and the injection pump is up front of motor drivers side... . right???

Like someone else said, I'd check the fuel filter before going too far down the LP road. On the other hand, the fuel filter won't purge/refill if the LP is dead, will it?

Perhaps that will make a good diagnostic?

I vote fuel filter too. At least that'd be the first thing I checked. I can't imagine how dirty that thing would have to be to stop the truck from running. My dad has a van with the powerstroke in it. He hadn't heard about how important it was to change the fuel filters in diesel trucks. I think most people that come from a gasser and don't have the benefit of forums like these don't know the filters need changing more frequently than a gasser - which sometimes never get changed until the engine quits!!

If you remove the lift pump that has failed you can start it and run with no lift pump. You will need a fitting or 2 to bypass the pump mounting.
