2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Quick review of brakes

I have a 2001 4x4 with 117K miles, disk front and rear drum. I need to get my brakes in shape before a trip in two weeks. Brakes are not my thing, and I need some direction. I am expecting the following:

1. New Rotors

2. New Front Pads

3. New Rear Pads



Any suggestions on type of rotors/pads and where to buy them?



I hear the front disks are a pain to get off the truck. Is this true?



If I have time, I am considering buy the proper tools doing this job with some friends. Worst case, I will buy the parts and have a shop do the work. Yes, I suck!

I don't know if this helps but rear should be shoes. correct me if Im wrong someone. I'm looking at purchasing new rotors and front and rear breaks myself. I was quoted 39. 90 for front pads, rear shoes 63,90 and mid-grade rotors - 23. 33, I also was quoted for a better grade rotor oh 65. 33 each. This was all quoted from advanced auto parts. At least now you might have a good idea how much it'll hit your wallet for.

These are heavy trucks with lousy panic or heavily laden braking. Go with quality rotors,perhaps powerslot slotted and quality pads and shoes. You might want to replace rear wheel cylinder with a one-ton Chevy and associated hardware. Do a brake search for more info. Those $23. 33 rotors are coming from political prisoner labor in China.

do nto skimp on brakes. yo uwill be paying a lot more than what you saved. I went with power slots and raybestos severe duty pads, in the front, and the same pads in the rear. stops very well. much better than stock.

Where did you purchase the raybestos pads? I found the severe duty pads on their site, but they do not list any retail stores.



Anyone know if the front rotors are hard to remove?

if the front is the same as my 02 they are very easy to remove. remove the caliper and bracket and beat them off :-laf I bought my pads through a local place I used to work for selling stock and performance. if your looking to order a set I can probably arrange something for you. just pm me

Where did you purchase your power slots and pads?

Are the cryo rotors that much better?

I installed Powerslot frozen rotors and Hawk pads in front. I got them from autoanything.com. Good price and free shipping. I installed heavy duty shoes by Satisfied on the rear as well as 1 3/16 "Chevy" rear wheel cylinders. The whole package made a world of difference.

I called AUTOANYTHING to check availability of the rotors, but it will be two weeks for the standard power slot and three weeks if I want the cryo. I might try to stick it out.



I also looked at the hub and rotor assembly. There appear to be some bolts that hold the two together, but I am unsure how easy they are to separate.



Is it possible to get the two apart without taking the hub off of the front axle?



Napa sells the hub and rotor assembly online. With 117K would it be best to get a new hub and bearings, bearings only, or none at all? Maybe I am making this too difficult?
