Getting ready to bump the timing on my 96 and I was curious, exactly how important is the Thrust washer and bearing described in the shop manual? It would seem I could just tighten the nut down and be done with it. I just want to make sure I have all the necessary tools so this goes as smoothly as possible:D

I believe the thrust washer comes with the Miller/SPX kit. I use the SP-500 from Snap-on. You use it when you tighten the nut on the pump shaft. All it does is reduce friction between the nut and the gear to reduce the chance of the timing changing. once its snugged up its removed and replaced with the lock washer.
