What Dodge should have done!

Clutch slipping BAD...Still SMOKED Dura?

They maybe o. k. for some, but not for me. There's just nothing like the sound of my Cummins under full load. It seems like when I load up my 23' gn with whatever I find myself rolling my windows down, slider open, and radio off :D . Seems like the more I load on her the more she wants. She also gets louder(must be the constant 30+ lbs. of boost). Of course I also like the the sound of my 440 with open headers:D . Doug

Right on Doug, I'm with you on that, If the new trucks sound like the Gords and Chezzy's I may just keep my Y2K model for a long time. ;)

Escpecially when the muffler falls off!

:D I had my local muffler man replace the stock

muffler with a section of 3" straight pipe. The

stock resonator is still there, and the sound is

just what I wanted. Lots of low rumble, and a lot

more of the turbo whistle comes out of the tail

pipe, especially during shifts! Sounds more like

a big rig. At highway speeds, there is no annoying

resonation/drone. I would prefer to have gone

with a JRE 4" system, but this gets me started.

The 4" system is on my "wish list" along with an

exhaust brake.

Doug,

I agree with you 110%! I thought I was the only one who has the windows down and the beer can window open just to hear the mighty Cummins! ;)

Acually my 3year old nephew loves it more than me. He crys if he don't get to ride in uncle Dougs truck. Future t. d. r. member for sure :) .

exhaust etc

chris:

build your own 4" system. doug at smokin' diesel sent me a 4" downpipe and 4" tail pipe. i added a straight thru truck muffler and some straight 4" pipe. really sounds great. turbo noise out the pipe, deep tone, and NO DRONE!! had a hard time convincing one of my friends the truck is still stock. e-mail me if you want to build the system, and i can give you the details... ... .

I could do without the rattly, I guess. I know Mrs Doc would be happy. I want the deep 4" full flow exhaust roar though. That's cool!

Cummins powered monsteroar

There is a limit to loving the sound of a working diesel.

This beast has an open exhaust and is very very loud. Operator says sitting in the driver's seat is the same as standing nearby.

What's that you say?

Was out jogging last week when I saw(not heard) a Duramax pull up to a stop sign. It was as quiet as a gasser on take off.

I saw the badges on the doors,It was a Diesel.

The only thing making the new Cummins quieter is the pilot injection with the common rail. Just a simple software adjustment could make it sound like it's older bretheren.

I'm looking for the aftermarket guys to offer a performance enhancement with an optional quiet switch. Even though I love the sound of my truck, it would be handy at times to kill the noise without shutting down the motor.

Steve, You meant Duramax, right. The Cummins common rail won't be out till 2003 in the US.

I went to the GA National fair Sunday and took a few minutes at the Cheby/GMC display to look at a 2500 with the DMAX. No thanks. From the very narrow, long serpentine belt to the location of the fuel filter and turbo I was not impressed. I had glanced in the engine compartment on one earlier but this time I noticed a lot more nightmares waiting to come alive. Hey, if that's what it takes to be quiet (covering the turbo with a big plastic Turbo Diesel 6. 5 plate, to all the aluminum, to the only about 5 of 8 injector lines that could be seen) I'll wait on the Cummins common rail. I like the sound of the Diesel anyway. I thought the DMAX looked cheap and light duty. Negative impression on that thing.

Alan, I definitely meant the Cummins common rail system to be coming out. Maybe I was just getting ahead of myself there:rolleyes: .

I wouldn't even think of giving up my Cummins for a Duramax, in my opinion the competition's v-8 diesels aren't even comparible to the mighty inline 6. :D

I think the new technology has a lot of potential, but at the same time I like the simplicity of my truck.

in-line 6

Hey all,I know this has been said here before but just go to the local truckstop and start raising hoods. I'm sure you want see very many (if any)V-8 configurations. I've worked on over the road trucks for over 15 years. Detroit used to make the silver 92's. But ditched them for 60 series. Why?(1)40% less moving parts. (2)The v-8 configuration was much less reliable. (3)E. P. A. regulations  . Too much oil slobber. (4)Poor fuel economy with the v-8... . There were probably more reasons than that. I've worked on just about every truck diesel out there. Have seen in-line cats,Cummins, and Detroit 60 SERIES go close to or over a million miles before overhaul. The old slobber 92's were lucky to make it 100k  . Now i've read about 2 C. T. D. s with over a million miles on them,(with no internal work done)which doesn't really surprise me. I know of several around my area with between 300 and 600K on them. Now if I see a v-8 go that far without sinking your life savings into them I'll be surprised. Also My neighbor bought him a new dura-whatever. I checked it out . Raised the hood  What a nightmare:mad: . Looked worse to work on than a Flowerpoke:rolleyes: Drove it was'nt that impressed:eek: . My little old 6 cylinder will kick that things a*s ;) :D :D . ,and with 2 less holes. Sorry so long. Doug

Dodge CTD sound levels

I borrowed a sound level meter from the office today and made a few measurements on the way home. Truck is stock, see sig. I don't have anything to compare them to, so I don't know how useful this information is but here goes:

40 db - truck parked, engine off

60 db - truck parked, engine started

74 db - accelerating up to ~50 MPH

70-72 db - cruise at 65 MPH

66 db - cruise at 45 MPH

80-82 db - truck parked outside, engine running, measured outside just forward of LH mirror.

86 db - turck parked in garage, engine running, measured outside just forward of LH mirror.

I was kind of supprised that while cruising, the sound level didn't change very much under different conditions, (e-brake on, radio on, climbing slight grades, etc. ) Has anyone seen numbers from chevy or Ford?

Is it possible for the common rail to be loud?

It was mentioned earlier the pilot injection for the common rail system is what will make these new engines quiet. Is it possible to do a software adjustment to eliminate ( or cut back) the pilot injection and the engine still run properly???

It truly would be nice if the aftermarket could find a way for the Cummins "sound" we love to live on. :)

First, apologies to Steve Roseman. I reread your post. We agree, it's coming on the new ones. Sorry.

On the pilot injection, with the Duramax, the pilot injection system that works is cancelled at 2500 RPMs. In other words, it stops working at that engine speed and becomes a noisy diesel like all the others. Therefore, it can be eliminated in software but I doubt any dealer would do the reflash voluntarily. I'll stay with the Cummins. They will do pilot injection as Steve said but that's just a two shot deal. I like to keep it simple and have one big shot of diesel for power. Quiet don't pull a load. Power pulls a load.
