I have been considering adding a set of 5 inch miter cut stack to my 3rd gen 3500. I love the look of the stacks however I like the fact that I can pull up to a drive through and not have to turn the truck off. Has anyone found a combination that give a semi stock sound? I know many feel that louder is better but I don't want to listen to a loud drone pulling a 37 foot trailer 1000 miles.

with a quad, you can have quiet stacks...

I'm pretty sure you can squeeze a 51" donaldson under a quad cab... if that's not enough (which it should be) you can get some auger bit inserts (that's not what they're called, but that's what they look like... ) actually, just buy one and cut it in half...

it'll probably quieter than stock w/ the 51" and the stack inserts! :)

if you still have the Kat on you might be able to move the stock muffler towards it. i don't know for sure. i have some 5" stacks straight and kept the Kat on for now but it might come off in the summer. if your state doesn't do emissions i would cut the Kat and put the 51" nelson on or a muffler of preference. i wouldn't put the stocker back on even though that saves money. aftermaket will lower egt's and give a little better tone possibly.

I've ridden in trucks with mitre cut and turn back stacks and inside the cab the turnbacks seemed quieter. If you had the stacks higher above the cab than a couple of inches that might make a difference.

I'll be doing stacks on my new truck but am going to do turnbacks since the mitres I had on a past truck blew black crap all over the place on start up after a rain since the rain just fell straight down in them. I like the mitre look better but they sure were messy.

there was no difference in interior noise between my miters and turnbacks (both loud as all getout)

but w/ the windows down, the miters were FAR noisier!!!

I have seen big truck mufflers with the outlet on the SIDE. Shouldn't be too hard to slip in the muffler in place of the 90* elbow turning up to the bed.

those insert mufflers at berubes are the ones I was talking about when is said auger bit inserts... they're 72" long, so just buy one and cut it in half
