Does Cummins have ownership in Lucas Oil ?

Stock exhaust anyone

My friend needs to get more air to his engine without any more noise, egts need to come down. With all the choices available, BHAF, Scotty II, Volant, Mega-Cannon and K&N intake system does anyone have an idea which may be the quietest? I realize sawing a hole though the firewall doesn't help noise wise. Does it really matter if you are sucking underhood air while moving?

SHHHHHHH!!!

I've tried stock, stock box w/K&N, K&N 880 w/prefilter (the loudest), and the Wix Bhaf. . The Wix is by far the quietest... I even took off the silencer ring, and I can finally hear the turbo whining. .

I would think the AFE kit or the K&N kit would be the quietest and flow the most air. I take it that a K&N in the factory airbox won't cut it.

When I went from stock to a K&N in my stock box there was no differance. I just installed the AFE mega cannon and I can hear the turbo over my 4" dual straight exhaust. I think I'm going to have to try to add some sound deadening in the fire wall. So if quiet is what you want, I wouldn't go with the Mega cannon! But it sure flows some air!

I'm running the AFE Mega-cannon... You can hear the whine in the next county! Quiet? No! - but boy does it let the air flow. If primary concerns are EGT's, IMO, noise has to take a back seat.

I have the 0880 and without the ring it drove me nuts so I put the ring back in. Perfect..... Oh, did I forget to mention that I am 50% deaf in both ears. (Might have something to do with it):D

I am also looking for more air flow and do not want extra noise.

CCaHill,

Am I reading your post right, wix BHAF is quieter or just as quiet as the stock air filter and box? That would be great:)

Ron

I've about quit responding to BHAF threads, don't wanna appear biased, but it seems to me that the Napa 2790 I'm running is quiter without the silencer ring than the stock setup without the ring.

I know when I pulled the ring with the stock filter and housing, I put it back in after a long trip. With the BHAF and no ring, all I hear from the drivers seat is very muted turbo noise when making boost. Not at all objectionable. And I've got a 4. 5" open hole in the cowling duct.

Added in edit; Bill, just reread both your post, if your friend has a properly maintained K&N, that's doing a good job on sealing and filtering, I doubt he'll get much EGT help with any of the BHAF's. Although it doesn't cost much to find out.

Sounds like it's time for a turbo housing change. My 16cm2 worked fine for me till I changed to the #5 plate, now I need a little more help. I've come up with some stainless steel cans originaly used on underground phone line repeaters that may work as BHAF filter housings, there're about 12"x15" and may allow the long sought after (by me at least) dual air inlet BHAF setup.

We'll see.

moparguy, he's running a non wastegated 16cm with #10 plate and 3000 GSK, all personally tuned by Piers. This '97 3500 really gets up and goes, probably would burn rubber in every gear. But you really have to watch the egts, just tapping on the throttle at 65 mph in 5th will send the egts soaring. Friend has to keep it under 60 on grades pulling his TT and wants to get it just a bit cooler, my feeling is his airfilter is about the only thing left besides taking it easy on the throttle. My feeling was that the BHAF would give him the most benefit without the noise but wanted to see what you guys thought. By the response it looks like BHAF may be the way to go.

Hey guys, if you really want air and quiet call Doug Hofeldt. Get an Air Bulldog hood or his new Dam Air. I can't tell you about the Dam Air but his hood actually made my truck quieter. I can barely even hear the B-1 (which is kind of a bummer). The hood is good quality and I'm sure the the Dam Air system works well too. Can anybody chime in on this. Yes it's more expensive now but hey, if you want cheap don't start bombing. ;)

I went from the stock air box/filter to the Scotty set up with the hole in the cowl, using the K+N RE0880. This a great system for peformance, IMHO, but the whistle through the vents will either make you smile or frown, depending on your fondness for the turbo whistle at spool up or your level of hearing loss ;) . I didn't mind the whistle, others that rode in the passenger seat did this all the time  (read wife).

I recently removed the K+N for cleaning and replaced it with the BHAF. No doubt that it's quiter, although you do still hear a faint whistle through the vents at spool up. So far, it appears to perform as good as the K+N. We did have a few days of 85F + temps. a few weeks ago, the egt's were still within the same boundries of the K+N. Overall, I'm very happy with the BHAF.

I also went from the stock box/filter to the stock box w/K&N. The only thing that I noticed was slightly faster spool up and more noise. No difference in fuel economy and a very slight EGT drop.

Then I installed the Bhaf with the Mallory mount. I am happier now. This unit is quieter, flows more air and the EGT's are lower. The filter was only $43. 00 at Cummins West in West Sacramento and the Mallory was $75. 00 from Jay Boesl. Cab noise is the same as stock, and the best part is I am not thinking about all of the dirt that I was having pass while driving on dirt roads.

BHAF is quieter by far

Went from K&N RE0880 to the BHAF wix. The BHAF is alot quieter, and flows the same if not better.

Even tried the K&N stock airbox replacement filter, and it was louder than the BHAF in my truck.

BHAF...very quiet for sure...but not my choice!!

I have used every filter mentioned in this thread. For me personally I love the AFE Mega Cannon, but it is definately the loudest, with that you get by far IMHO the lowest EGT's I have seen. A compromise if you are willing to do that would be the BHAF. . it is very very quiet and does give you a decent drop in EGT's and it has a cheap price tag too!
