I opened my trusty FSM to research what I have to do to remove and replace my engine. In typical fashion some steps were not addressed, and other steps seem like they are not required.



They have you discharging the A/C, but later on removing the compressor with the hoses attached and setting it aside, then removing the condensor. I'm thinking the condensor can be unbolted and folded out of the way.



They have you removing the radiator, and crossmember, but not the intercooler:confused:



Can the engine and trans be removed as a unit? Does the oil pan really need to be removed?



Any hints or tips on this job? I have R&Rd quite a few gas engines, but this job seems a little overwhelming.
 
Don't be overwhelmed, it's not that bad. Everything is bigger and heavier than most any gas engine swap but there isn't as much stuff (wires, emission hoses) to disconnect and there is enough room to work around most components.

I've done enough engine swaps that they all seem to blend together in the grey matter. IIRC I removed the bumper, rad, intercooler, condensor and core support. The A/C parts removal wasn't a big deal to me since I have the equipment to recharge the system.

I think the oil pan does hit the crossmember before the engine is far enough forward for the rear of the engine to clear the cowl, so it does need to be removed. I would guess the transmission could stay attached but I removed mine (to get rid of the NV4500!) before I stsrted on the engine.

Make sure you have a good hoist and strong chains, the Cummins is heavy.
