Race to the Clouds - Pics from the Hill Climb!!

So, you want to go camping ;) , you want to eat great ribs :D , you want to get out and enjoy nature :) , you want to get your truck up in the woods  , and you want to watch some of the best and most dangerous racing money can buy  - well, your chance has come! Oo.

CampFest 05 is ON!! Oo.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb - Race to the Clouds - 25 June 2005!!

Here's the deal:

24 June -

3 pm: Arrive - Gather and camp out in the Garden of the Gods campsite area.

7 pm: Dinner - Full course meals of ribs, sides, drinks and deserts.

~10 pm: Crash out for 5-hour sleep (keep reading... :-laf )

25 June -

3 am: Start Engines: As quietly as possible, cruise out of campground and head up the 5-mile stretch to the Pikes Peak Highway entrance, and get in line.

4 am: Gates open. Head up to one of several possible sites, and shut 'em down. Tentatively looking at Glen Cove. Go mark our spots for the race, and cat-nap in the rigs until breakfast. ATV's allowed, and I'll have mine for moving gear, chairs, etc. Could use a few more.

7 am: Breakfast and coffee - Breakfast burrito chow-fest. Full breakfast and drinks.

10 am: Race starts.

4 pm: Race ends. Compeditors parade down the mountain. Gather gear, chairs, etc, load the rigs, and head down.

Camping: $28/nite for 2 people (one 'tent'). I have 10 campsites earmarked already - I just have to tell the man 'we'll take 'em!". The number of sites is dependent on how many RSVP's I get. I have to know soon and the RSVP's have to be serious.

Race tickets: $35, $40 day of race. I can get them all in advance based on RSVP's. Send me a check or bring cash - it's all good, just be there ;) .

Lots of details to come - mostly logistics, maps, etc. All I need at this point is a 'yae' or 'nae'... actually all I need is 'yae's' :-laf . If you haven't seen the Hill Climb, well, it's fantastic, and at times completely breathtaking, especially at Glen Cove. The camping beforehand is just a fun way to gather and goof off, eat good foor, meet and greet friends, and basically have a good time.

This event will be run jointly with the Southern Colorado Mopars car club as well as the Ramcharger Central Club of Colorado - all car and truck fans, and all Mopar. I would like to keep it open for friends/family as you'd like to do - it's all good, but these three clubs are the main players.

So lemme hear ya and send me the RSVP's. I'm fairly sure the 10 campsites will fill up fast, and I can get more as needed. Cool deal - see you on the Mountain!

Sam, I'm gonna miss this one. I'll be in upstate NY that weekend to bury my grandfather. I've always wanted to witness this race. :{ Thanks for putting this all together anyway. See ya on the 16th.

Okay - lemme hear from y'all Oo. - I gotta know how many spots to reserve. Is there any on y'all that want to hit this gig??!! It sounds like a lot to pack in... and it kinda is... but I'll have all the logistics covered and I'll be asking for help with the food, for side dishes, deserts, mains, etc, and I'll work the maps, etc. Please let me know if you want to head up the mountain. If you've never been to this race it is really a fantastic time and well worth the early hours, etc.

Lemme hear from ya! :DOo. :D

Sam,

How about if we offer this up as a group camping trip for everyone even if you are not interested in the race. There are plenty of other things to do in the Springs area while you are there. I was thinkin about just coming for the camping part and the fellowship stuff at the campground. I do not think my granddaughter will be excited about sitting on the mountain watching the race. I'll see you guys Saturday and we will discuss more.

no problem - that's all good

Mike -

That's a good idea, and that would be completely cool. I am handling all the 'race' details, but I hadn't considered staying at the campsite that morning. Maybe you could work the morning breakfast, cleanup, etc, and I'll work the logistics for going up to see the race?

Either way is cool - I just have to RSVP the sites soon so I'll need to know how many as soon as possible, etc.

See you Saturday amigo

Lookin' good -

Okay - all ten sites are RSVP'd - I think we'll fill 'em in short order. All of them are within eyesight of each other, and there is a common area for the BBQ pit, socializing, etc.

I'd like to get banners from the clubs that are coming so we can have a club pow wow in style! So, is there a TDR banner we can get for this? We could have decals for sale for members, and maybe do some advertising/marketing for the club. Does our chapter have tee-shirts with the logo on 'em? Can we get some made and sell them at the dinner? I'd buy several of them, especially black long-sleeve XL's! Thoughts?

Next, food. I'm going to check out the BBQ pits and see if they need charcoal, wood, both, etc, and I want to ask if there are some seriously good grillmasters out there that could handle some seriously good food. I'm talking meat - ribs especially. I want to have a pot-luck style dinner, but the main foods would be covered by a dedicated group of grill masters. We'll all pony up $$$ for the food, etc, and cover those folks that bring the majority of it. Same old usual. This also applies to the breakfast burrito feast the next morning, and I'm planning to work most of that, and we'll need the propane stoves for that part as there are no campfires on the Peak. We'll divy up drinks, paper plates, utensils, etc, and when we get the list of people coming we'll divy that up. For the meantime I want to ask that everyone bring their favorite side dish, dessert, whatever you like, and we'll have a big old honkin' potluck food feast!

Cool, lots more to follow. ... . boy I sure hope I get the RC done in time :p . If not though I'll be in one of my buddy's rigs, so I'm definitely there.

Cool, thanks for all the offers for help and RSVP's. We'll work the sleeping arrangements as soon as the slots fill up. If you have a buddy, and that buddy is coming, we'll work the tents as necessary with whomever you feel comfortable with. If you want your own tent, just state so with your RSVP.

Thanks all,

- Max

2-1/2 weeks out!!

2-1/2 weeks away!! Oo. :D Lookin' good y'all! - I want to ping this again and get signups for the potluck.

Need all the foods for about 15-20 people - mains, sides, deserts, drinks, plus breakfast foods for the next morning: Sausage, eggs, tortillas, salsa, cheese, OJ, coffee, creamer, etc etc.

This is just the basics of what will be needed so I figure I'll send it out and we'll get all the bases covered now. So, if you can reply back with your choices and that way everyone will know who's bringing what.

I'm bringing a big ole rack of ribs and a bunch of chicken drumsticks for the main dinner on Friday, plus everything that goes with ribs to make 'em and clean up afterwards. I'm also bring my Mad Max Baked Beans - always a crowd favorite.

We're looking at somewhere like 15-20 people between 3 clubs! Awesome!

Next - Hill Climp Tickets. I can get a bunch soon and am looking for numbers. I believe in the honor system so if you tell me you want 'x' number I'll get em and you can reimburse me at the BBQ. I'm going to be picking up supplies and tickets this week and next so lemme know what ya want.

Mike, could you help facilitate maybe a convoy from that area down here and to help me organize numbers, etc? There'll be guys from Cheytown areas as well.

Lastly, I'm thinking about having a 'that-was-a-great-time!' BBQ at my place after the race, Saturday evening. Any interest? I figure we'll have lots of leftovers so we could jam out there and eat it all up. Thoughts?

Thanks all - going to be a killer time, and we're just 2-1/2 weeks away!

Sam,

I am not going to be able to make it down for this. I am super busy with work right now and have vacation plans for the first week in july. Jsut too many committments for me to do everything. Talk to you later.

Mike L.

I have the tent sites locked down - we have a great spot, nice and open, big area to mingle and bench race, grill and tell war stories. We're right near the highway, about 15 minutes from the race course entrance.

Here's who's coming that I know of:

Me, Dianna, Trevor, Bob, Pete and his wife, SOOT. Sure it's not a huge crowd but that's cool too, and I'm going regardless of numbers :-laf .

Here's the map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=3704+....024563,0.040040&sspn=0.024564,0.040040&hl=en

The directions are: I-25 (Colorado Springs), Exit 141; W on US 24 (a couple miles); N at 31st St 1 block to Colorado Ave (left lane turn); w 6 blocks to entrance on right.

Enter the campgrounds, go past the 'office' and turn left, veer straight to back edge of camp areas until you see the playground and restrooms - our camp sites are just past the playground. Back into parking spaces bordering playground. There's a pic of our camp area below:

Here's my stab at food signups:

- Dinner (at the camp ground)

Sam: Ribs and beans, and a stereo

Dianna: Guacamole dip and chips (it's scary good y'all)

Pete: Side dish - Mac-n-cheese or string bean casserole (?) or other favorite (?)

Trevor: Ribs

Bob: Dessert (maybe smores or ice cream... okay -both)?

Pete: Paper items: plates, plastic utensils, napkins, trash bags??

SOOT: Drinks: Sodas, water, and of course beer

Can anyone bring firewood that'll last for a few hours? The firering is about 3' diameter, and we'll do smores on that till we're stuffed.

- Breakfast (on the mountain, tailgate style):

Sam: Eggs, Tortillas, salsa, sausage, cheese

Trevor: Drinks: Orange juice, coffee/creamers (we'll brew it up there on the Colman stove)

Pete: Same as dinner

Other items needed: Rolls, bagles, muffins, etc?

If y'all are okay with the above please reply back so we'll all know.

Everyone will need to bring their own sleeping arrangements. The sites are reserved but you'll need tents (or maybe your pickup bed), sleeping bags, lanterns, etc etc. We are within sight of a nice restroom so water, cleanup will be a snap.

I have already paid for the sites so y'all can just toss me $30 for each site and we'll be square. We'll probably just get the hill climb tickets at the gate. I'm looking at prepurchasing tickets beforehand. Can do that this week. Anyone want me to get theirs in advance?

Okay, keep an eye on this thread and I'll update as the days count down.

For the race, you will need at least: Chairs, sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks and WATER, a stereo tuned to the am station covering the race.

I will be bringing premade sandwiches. During the race it is very tough to move around so I recommend you bring a separate cooler with 'lunch' and snacks during the race to have with you. Camping tip #1: If you load up on bread the night before you'll be good to go as far as #2 bathroom breaks.

Okay, 5 days amigos! - more to follow.
