Competition 2006 Carlisle All-Truck Nationals PULLS!!!!!!!!!!!

Competition Garmon's 2005 12v Update

Talk about a kick in the pants. Went to get some stuff out of the trailer, and the lock hasp had been cut off with a bolt cutter. Strong lock ,but they went around it. All of the tools are gone. Boxes and all. It was parked in ATS's yard, out in the light, but they are getting brave. They left a lot behind, maybe tools were the only thing they thought they could sell. Filed a insurance claim for the tools, hope that I get close to whole on the deal. I am going to rework the lock on the doors, and this will not happen again. Luckily, the car and most of the good parts were out of the trailer. Still trying to see what is missing. The cops were nice, and told me that RV's and campers are the latest target for thieves. They broke in through the double doors into the cargo area. They were in the front, too, but nothing was missing.

The more I think about it the more upset I get, as I know that the tools were likely sold for nothing compared to what they are worth. I am thinking a large shotgun wired to the door.....

Scott, what kind of trailer is this? Haulmark? Wells Cargo? Featherlite?

It really is a shame how unsecure most otherwise nice trailers are.

We could all take to heart that "a padlock is only as strong is what it's locking to".

Personally, I think you should wire in some kind of electrostatic discharge. If you touch the trailer with the security on, you can the zap of your life.

To be really secure, you could wire it up to some standalone batteries inside the trailer.

I'm thinking a couple large Odyssey batteries, a large step-up transformer and a bank of huge capacitors.

That should suffice to give someone a nearly lethal if not just scary zap that would make them reconsider the pennies they'll get from some tools.

Die thieves!

Need a new lock?

Was the lock cut or the latch on the trailer? Here is what a company I used to work for used for locks. Supposed to be thief proof. Secured million dollar loads  . Hardened, and can't get the bolt cutter around the top...

If you need one, you can have this one. It won't bring back your tools, but might help detour a break-in again.

It does not matter what kind of lock you have, if they want in they will just pull the doors off with chain and there truck.

If it was me I would bolt a box over the lock, much like they use on explosive storage. You have to reach up inside the box to get to the lock and there is no way to get a bolt cutter on the lock or latch.

this is the lock I use for my trailer. I like them but I know that if they want in they will get in. Lucky for me that the trailer is parked outside my bedroom window so good luck to anyone who breaks in at night. Jason

Damn... . sorry to hear that. My shop trailer got broken into last year. They got a stereo (left the harness), speakers (left the mounting bases), a portable DVD player (won't work without the remote) and a 7" LCD monitor (left the harness). What ****** me off most is after they broke in THEY USED MY TOOLS to rip me off. I kept thinking they needed to steal and sell the stuff to feed their baby. Wishful thinking.

Sorry to hear about it. Hope they catch em.

Sorry to hear that Scott. That really sux donkey balls.

I've thought about the Electrostatic discharge before. Get something along the lines of a livestock fence zapper. Wire it to the door. Have it hooked to a keyless entry/alarm devise.

How hard would it be to use some automotive style popers/latches? No outside handles or locks, no way in. Have it hooked to the battery for the electric brakes(obviously upgrade the battery). If the battery goes dead, just jump it and hit the button... .

Like my dad always sayts " locks only keep out the honest thiefs" . Like somebody else said if they want in they'll get in one way or another, it's just a matter of how hard it'll be. Sorry to hear about the break in Scott. It really sucks when the stuff you work for gets stolen by somebody too lazy to work for it themselves.

Josh- An electric fencer??? That sounds a little weak for you, I thought you'd suggest a 12ga set up at just below belt height when the door opens.

Clint (from ATS), Dustin and I, are thinking that we set a trap.

I have another trailer, set it up, catch the ***** heads breaking it, and then lock them inside the trailer. After a day or two, (or a couple weeks... . ) haul them to the lake, back the trailer in to 6' of water, let them swim for a day or two. By then, I bet that they will talk fluently about where the tools are and who else is in the deal.

the issue? We would end up in jail. So what. JUSTICE< BABY!!!!

I like that idea Scott. Sorry to hear about the break in. Unfortunately, our laws seem to protect the criminals don't they? You get busted for nailing the bad guy

Mr. Bentz, sorry to hear about this.

When I was racing sprint cars it wasn't uncommon to have six figures worth "stuff" (car, tools, spare parts, safety equipment, etc) locked inside. I invested in a Pro-Tec 1 trailer security system. www.protecsystemone.com

At first I thought it was $600 of useless expense, but after it foiled a break-in attempt in Phoenix, AZ I spent another $200 to make sure all the windows and roof hatches were wired into the system as well. :-laf

They're pretty cool--not only does any trailer movement or the opening of a door/hatch/window set off the alarm siren (128db standard, I purchased a 155db unit from a law enforcement supply house and had it wired in for additional noise pollution), but it locks the electric brakes so the unit can't be moved... ..... well it could be moved but it'd be rather conspicuous. I also had it wired in to flash the running lights and the optional 12v worklights I had installed on both sides. The whole deal made for a very loud, very obnoxious package.

They work well, too---I once forgot to disarm it before opening the generator door. It made for some rather ticked off fellow hotel patrons at 3 o'clock in the morning. Oops!

Just had a older friend tell me about his retired buddy,

Guy spent around 80 grand on his 69 camaro retsoration. He gets to his first show spends the night in a cheap hotel. Theives cut the locks on his hauler and try to drive his car off, he just happened to spent a few minutes puting a simple disconect into his wiring and the car wont start. Cops bust the thieves a mile and a half down the road form the hotel pushing the car cause it wouldn't crank and they didn't look like they could own such a fine car and didn't have any proof of ownership.

guy saved his 80 grand car with a $2 toggle switch (probobly the + wire to the 6AL box)

sorry about your loss Scott I think theives should be punished right up there with child molesters

Scott, be thankful that they didn't take the whole trailer. Happens more and more now a days. I do hope you are able to find out who took them.

I hope you find the falkers and give them what they deserve. I'm sure nobody here will ask questions. Maybe they'll make it my way and I'll hear about it ;) . Nothin' better then an "impaired" thief :D
