I just finished changing out the radiator and heater hoses. I used a set of the Taiwanese knock-off hose clamp pliers from Harbor Freight. They worked OK on the upper hose and the heater hoses, but were a chore on the lower radiator hose. At $12 for the set, they were worth the price. But, does anyone know of a brand that would work better on the lower radiator hose? It's bigger and a different design would be nice. Less than $100 would also be nice.

Also, I installed Prestone long life "Dex" compatible coolant. It's the stuff that looks like orange juice. Is there any reason whay I should NOT use it? I chose it because it meets ASTM 3895, where the green stuff doesn't.

Has anyone had to replace the two smaller bypass hoses? Are they a Cummins or a Dodge part? they look molded.

Matt,

Here's something that was published with my article on coolant system service a few issues back.

"The Cummins engine uses spring-type, constant tension hose clamps for the cooling system. These clamps require a special tool to remove and replace them. In a pinch (pun intended) you can use slide-lock pliers, or other tools, but trust me, you don’t want to.

The proper tool is the Dodge hose clamp tool, #6094. You can also buy a similar tool at your local NAPA dealer. It’s NAPA part number 3444 and is called large hose clamp pliers. Your Snap-On tool dealer will have one under Snap-On number HPC-20. These tools will not only grip the clamp properly, but they will also lock closed to allow you to position the clamp where you want it. The ends swivel to allow adjustment to whatever angle is needed. "

I've had good and bad luck with Harbor Freight's stuff. Too bad about the hose clamp pliers. The NAPA 3444 sells for about $20, as I recall.

The coolant you chose is okay, although I prefer a different OAT (Organic Acid Technology) coolant. See the discussion at

If Robert publishes the article I sent him, there will be more information in the next TDR also.

Sorry, I can't help you with any information about the hoses.
