Any of you fellow first gen owners put an aftermarket radio in your truck? Mine died and it appears that hole is huge compared to the rest of the units on the market. Anybody know what other Chrysler radios might be compatable? Thanks GGSoldan

Install kits

Most installers have kits to add aftermarket radios. I pulled my AM/FM Casstte and add a sony AM/FM CD with no problems. You should be able to add dang near any radio you want.

I don't know if you have a "Best Buy" electronics store near you, but I bought an aftermarket Pioneer from them. They not only had the plastic adapter to make the new stereo fit the old hole (it's so perfect, you would think it came from the factory with a Pioneer in it), but they also have a wiring harness that simply plugs into your existing harness in the 1st gen. No more splicing and searching for the right wires. If you continue to have a problem, let me know, the adapter was cheap, and I could get one and mail it to you.

There are plenty of quality options for us. I have a aftermarket cd player in my 89, install kit looks and worked great. I had a cd player from a 98 Dodge Van in my 91. So the cd players/radios from Dodge vans/trucks at least up to 98 will work. I bet they will work well into the 02 models.

My stock radio still works really well... it's just that the tunes that come out of it really bite... . go figure. . :D

well, ok,,,, when it rains the drivers door speaker sounds like a 50Kv transformer with a headache... ;):D

If you buy from Crutchfield they will provide the necessary mounting plate and wiring adapters. I ordered a Kenwood AM/FM/CD player from them and everything bolted in easily and looks great. :) I also replaced all the speakers with 6x9 Kenwoods - sounds a heckuva lot better than the stock AM/FM/cassette that came in my truck. :)

I went the Crutchfield route as well for the plate and harness to adapt a nice Blaupunkt to the dash.

What I really liked was the Crutchfield supplied instructions were perfect to the letter... .

I used an install kit from Best Buy also, nice little plastic fram that the head unit mounts to... and the harness BHiggins mentioned. It was pretty cheap too IIRC.

Took the Panasonic out of mine and found a '93 Dodge radio with the buttons across the bottom. Reason? The buttons are big enough and spaced enough to push when on rough road etc. I find that the new age radios are just too complicated, and I have to look at them when I should have my eyes on the road. The radio tech that checked my Dodge radio out, said that the older style radios were sought after for the same reasons. :D

My stock radio died and I went to Walmart and found a great Sony unit . they had the aftermarket install kit, wireing harness and everything. looks sano. The radio sounds 10 times better than it did. I was bummed at first but now I'm glad the stocker died... ...
