TDR Family,

The radio died in the pickup a couple days ago and the old lady decided she would go to one of those "discounter" sales  Well, lets just say the CD player didnt work (to say the least). I finally gave up on it, and pulled out the original radio that came with the truck (stock radio). After hooking up all the wires, nothing. AND, now I lost my interior lights too! Everytime I turn the radio on, the screen doesnt light up and I get a loud pop from the rear speakers (like turning on your home entertainment system on high, then while on high you plug in a IPOD or external source). Any ideas to make the lights and this stock radio work? Thanks in advance!

Kind Regards,

Sgt G

Sgt, thank you for your service. Your government doesn't respect you but I do.

Start with the basics. Check all the fuses in the left (driver's side) end of the dash and under the hood on the driver's side. Invest $5 or so in a basic 12v test lamp. It's a small plastic housing like fountain pen with a light in the barrel, a point on one end, and a short wire with an alligator clamp coming out the opposite end. Touch the clamp to ground and test for 12v by poking the pointed end against a wire, fuse, or terminal. Trace from the radio power source back to the fuse panel. You probably accidentally blew a fuse.

Mr Barlow,

i figured as much of blowing a fuse. All fuses seem to be in place. I have dimmer cabalities. All three radios that I have for the truck (one stock and two aftermarket) are doing the same things. All the lights for the background on them work, but the actual face plate dont work and no sound. I think I need a excorcism performed! Im also using a Fluke Multimeter for all testing. All testing seems (so far) to be working at 12 and change V's. Hmmm?

I don't know if Dodged does this but my wife just bought a Chevy Equinox. Ok on these vehicles have a tamper feature. That is if the radio is removed(stolen) the vehicle has to be taken to the dealer to get the radio activated. I am guessing something in PCM recognizes the serial number of the radio and it has to match what is in the PCM to work. I don't recall this being done by Dodge but only thing I can think of why a OEM radio does not work as it should. I am grasping for straws !!!!!!

Sgt.

I have a Stock 01 radio I put in a box. . Still in good condition... . PM me if you want to bu#ad
y it. Offer me.

IIRC, didn't some of the Infinity decks have a seperate amplifier that must be bypassed when hooking up an aftermarket deck ?

yes the infinity has seperate amps for eac speaker. Sarge bench test the radio with a seperate power supply and speakers you can run 2 wires to the trucks battery and use a set of house speakers to bench test it this will let you know if its the truck wiring or the head unit. if its an infiniti system this may not work due to the lack of amplifier in the radio. you can do a google search for which color wire is for what. let me know if you need more help

The speaker just went in my truck. i've never had an actual speaker stop working its always been the wire or radio but hoking up a house speaker to the trucks wire in the door proved it was the speaker

Your initial post was too brief and cryptic for me to understand what you bought and are trying to install.

If the replacement radio you bought came out of an '06 through '09 truck it may not work in your '01 because beginning in model year '06 all the electrical/electronics systems including sound systems utilize CANBUS technology. I know very little about CANBUS but understand that it exchanges communication signals back and forth over ordinary 12v wires.

thanks all for the input... nothing so far. Kenny, i will tomorrow when the rain stops. EricBu, that unit you have doesnt look ANYTHING like mine, Mr Barlow, its a stock radio from a 01. Will try the bench test tomorrow. Thanks all.

i am having the same problem as the op (minus the popping). i bought my truck with an aftermarket pioneer and assumed it was blown so i put in a stock radio from my jeep (same one that should have come in this truck) and nothing. i know for a fact that the "jeep" radio worked before i put it in the dodge. all fuses are good. get back lights but no radio functions, clock, etc.

If you know the radio works you need to test the factory wiring (make sure it has power)with a volt meter not just a test light. If the radio "lights up" run a set of test leads from the radio to a set of speakers that you know work. You need to break it down to each individual level to find what the problem is

Check the 10 amp fuse 12 in the Junction Block (B+). (driver's side of the dash) May be labeled IOD. This powers the radio, mirror, and some lighting circuits.
Also check the 10 amp fuse 8 (Fused Ignition power to the radio)
Fuse 1 and 5 deal with instrument and radio lighting.

BJohnson, that IOD fuse has a black plastic blocker over it. How would I remove this safety cover without breaking it? My airbags have the same safety however they are gold/yellow in color? This may be the answer, will post more tonight...

John

my problem turned out to be an absent IOD fuse. the p/o apparently ripped off that plastic cover and never returned the fuse. I thought it was a spare fuse slot until PBJ2500CTD recommended I check fuse 12 "IOD". my owners manual said fuse 15 was the IOD but that is clearly one of the airbag fuses.

does anyone have a list of the fuses for the in-cab fuse block they could post or pm me?

:D:D Ladies and Gentlmen, BJohnson is our lucky winner  Thats right, IOD #12 was the culprit. Thanks again all for your input. The rig has never run better. Soooo, until next time she breaks down  Thanks again...

John,I guess you must have figured out the puzzle to release the fuse lock. I totally forgot about them little pains in the posterior parts devices. (Quick, refresh my flickering and fading memory cell... what was the secret?) My 02 doesn't have them, but my 98 did. Glad the fix was something simple... for both you and Rowingfish87.
