Fight Delays Amtrak, BNSF trains
Amtrak train #4, east bound Southwest Chief, was delayed near Needles, CA on Tuesday night (Jan 23) when its engineer and assistant engineer had a dispute about smoking and stopped the train to fight it out on the ground.
The conductor went to investigate after the train stopped and he could not raise the head end crew. He found the two wrestling on the ground and called police.
The engineer and assistant engineer placed each other under citizens' arrest and the two were hauled off to the hoosegow (one was hospitalized, claimed he had broken ribs). The westbound Chief, which was in the area, stopped to allow its engineer-qualified assistant engineer to take over operation of Train #4 to Kingman.
BNSF freight traffic was tied up by this incident, and understandably BNSF is rather peeved. -Gene Poon

*****
Rough Day on the Union Pacific ... On January 16, 2001 train speed in Burmester, Utah, was restricted after police vehicles were found parked on the right of way [ie, ON the tracks]. The officers were searching for a small plane that had crashed into the Great Salt Lake. Also a train hit a Iowa State Patrol vehicle near Chariton, Illinois, but the officer sustained only a cut wrist. Finally, a train hit a dump truck at a private crossing -
