Anyone have a 2015 Ram that knows how often it regens? My 2012 would regen about every 80 miles driving around town and about 180 miles towing the 5er.
Joe Donnelly has an article in TDR Issue 86 pages 108-109 about the Edge Insight where he states he has only seen a couple of regens but didn't say how many miles that was driven.
So far I haven't seen any regens in the past 400 miles on my Edge Insight since I installed it. EGT 1 is running around 600 degrees most of the time. The DEF line pressure is running within a degree or two of 177.
 
From what I have read on here that is why the DEF was added. so the fuel is not used when going in regen mode. DEF is used instead of fuel. I could be wrong but I'm sure someone will chime and agree or correct me.
 
It still uses fuel for a regen, but regens are less frequent indirectly because of DEF. DEF is for converting oxides of nitrogen into water vapor and nitrogen. This conversion all takes place in the exhaust system.

High combustion temps create less particulate matter and thus keep the DPF cleaner, longer reducing regen frequency. However, higher combustion temps create more oxides of nitrogen. Before DEF was used, they had to compromise the combustion temps for both pollutants. With a DEF system, combustion temps can be ran higher for less PM formation (AND better performance/MPGs), then the DEF takes care of the oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust...instead of in the combustion chamber with lower temps.
 
As I understand it ,from 13 up there is both a passive and an active regen mode. The passive happens seamlessly when certain temps and conditions are met. You won't know its happening unless you stop at a light or something and notice a hot smell.
The active mode is supposed to show up on the EVIC but in 13000 miles, all highway and mostly towing I have never seen it happen. I have occasionally seen a drop in fuel economy for a short while on the EVIC that didn't seem right and that may be regen.
 
My 2015 (22,000 miles) has never indicated that it has gone into regen. I do get a rich smelling diesel exhaust smell now and then when I am stopped. Not sure what that is from.
 
Rich Diesel smell will most likely be your truck actually re-generating. The only time your truck warns you of regen is when it hasn't had the opportunity to really burn the soot out of the DPF and desperately needs to get a full burn-in finished. Then it will warn you. Otherwise, you will never see it and your truck will conduct regen when it thinks the conditions are right for it. Which sitting in traffic is annoying as you get that whif of diesel.
 
Makes sense now jus2shy. I wish it would do it when I was driving down the interstate and not when I was at the light in town.
 
I wish they would give us a button that when we know we're going to be on a long trip you could start a re-gen cycle at the start. Too many times I've seen it start the re-gen just as I was getting to my destination. My 2013 is not as bad as the 2012 was. The 12 would go into a re-gen every 40 miles or so. the 13 if I'm running BioDiesel can go as many as 3 tanks (roughly 1200miles) between re-gens.

There has been active and passive since the 6.7 came out. Passive just means that your EGT's are high enough to clean the DPF without needing added fuel, which generally only happens when towing heavy up a grade. Active just means that your using diesel in the exhaust stroke to heat the DPF.

The only time the EVIC will display a regen is when you get at or above 80% full, otherwise it's happening without notification.

IMHO , ^ this should be triggered by the cruise control.

On a slightly different note, Service Rep (not a mechanic) said the EVIC will prompt you to drive at highway speeds if it needs to regen. That might be the older trucks though. Sounds like they regen during any type of driving now????

not very.i don't want to mis qoute so ill try to pay more attention next time.Its a bit of a hand full trying to pay attention to the road and a lap top with a page full of data with old eyes

I can imagine, basically you watch for DPF percentage to decrease without active regen?

I always thought it took a higher EGT than one would make under normal driving, so this is good to know. Thanks.
 
These are pictures form My 3.0 Ecodiesel. My big Rams have the same gauges... You can watch back pressures, intake Pressures, Soot, ETC. I can predict when My big Rams are going to Active Regen, My little Ram in the 391 Miles I have own it has actively Regen Twice, the last time I just put it in (P) and let it run until finish, took 5.5 minutes, the other time was about the same time when driving.

correct you can watch the estimated weight decline
 
You can see a regen on a (PID) monitor such as a Bully Dog GT. The DPF sensors temp on the outlet side wil spike about 400 degrees higher than inlet temp. Mine does it about every 1000 miles of mostly highway use. Yes the DEF reduces NOX by injecting it into the SCR catalyst. This is compared to 2012 & realier that used EGR to cool exhaust temps and reduced NOX. Since DEF/SCR now shoulder most of that duty. the exhaust temps are higher helping to reduce active regens. Also improving fuel economy.
