How to tell 47RE from 48RE?

"Updated silencer baffle?" and "Where's the APPS?"

from the stock air filter mounting local there is a straight shot from air box to front of the grill. there is enough room to snake in a piece of 1. 5"(maybe larger) PVC ,cut hole inside of box, install a globe valve inline so that you can open and close at the end of the 1. 5" pipe a large collector. Should cost 15$ and take about 45min install. add a k&n to this system and you will probably lower egts by a considerable amount without having to spend $ 300 bones which i think is sky high! this system should work i will install it on my 03 when i get a chance and let you guys no. This is all in my mind right now but i will think more i am hoping to add in can adjustability. which will be easy i am going to see how it effects egt first. there is still no drop in oil filter out though which will be the key to making this ram air work. i have also though about cutting a hole in bottom of the air box and route some plumbing to the air dam and cutting holes in it to set a couple off collectors which would look similar to the chevy ss truck which has those two collectors in the air dam. this would probably work the best. but my 1st system would collect air further away from the ground which will help lower the temp of the air during the summer.

oh yea there will be a screen over the front of the collector.

I did what you were thinking about. I cut a 3 inch hole in the front side of the air box. I bought some pvc plumbing that has a threaded end. I mounted this facing the front of the grill. T he deal with the threaded pvc is in case it rains or snows I can screw the plug in. This is all mounted below the air filter, so when it is plugged it still gets the air from the stock inlet. Also I have the AFE air filter . I checked the performance and noticed quicker turbo spool ups, Dont know if I am getting higher EGT temps I need to check the pyro with the plug in /out. I f you would like a pic I can take one. Worth a thousand words. Oo.

Interesting idea. Seems to me that you'd have to somehow move the intake closer to the front of the truck to noticeably lower EGT's. I'd be afraid that setup would allow hot air into the box while standing still.

I like CAT's idea about routing it to the air dam, but my gut tells me you wouldn't exactly have ram air at that point, with all the 90 degree bends you'd have to make. Seems like you'd just be making an alternate air source at that point, but I'm no expert.

ram air

I am not worried about warm air entering the air box. This is in front of the fan directly behind the front grill. I did a road test and the exhaust temps are 500f-600f at 65 mph. the temps rise quicker than the non modified air box , also seems to cool down quicker. I am happy with this home made mod. It works for me:p

For those of you who are not do it yourselfers, there is the Scotty RamAir3

You can get them from www.wildcatdiesel.com

I believe that Diesel Dynamics also sells a similar setup.

It workes

I have been toying with this idea for a year now, my prototype is done and in service, here is a pic from the side, I have a butterfly installed in the inlet and I can activate it from the cab to any degree I want, I also have a temp senser in the airhorn to monitor and try to maintain 70* to 90* for optimum fuel efficiency. I am still testing it but I can tell you that it is well worth the effort. When empty at 70 mph with no ramair I am pulling underhood air and have had it to 98* so far and when I opened the butterfly my temp at the airhorn went down to ambient which at that time was 72*, I then adjusted until I was at 90*. Then I pulled my backhoe on a 68* day and ran with no ramair for 20 miles to get it as hot as it was going to get, 102* and when I opened the ramair it went down to 75*, I was impressed. I have noticed quicker spoolup and cooldown time went in half if I am moving.

heres the pic

I also want to add that a 3" will give you some cool air but you really need 2 of them at 3" to supply all the air needed. That is what I run and I also have a filter vaccumn gauge in the cab and at 5x5 on my comp with no ramair I can see it move just a bit but with ramair it willnot show a vacumn at all. I now run with an AFE filter. I since this pic have added a inlet screan to the front.

Here is a pic of the engine bay, like I say there is an AFE filter now instead of the BHAF.

if you really wanted to still put a valve of some sort in you wouldn't want to put a globe valve in you would want something with a straight shot through it. Globe valves are for throttling flow. You would want a ball or gate valve which is meant for straight through full open or closed positions. A screwed on cap would be your cheapest. Goodluck.

:-laf :-laf :-laf thats too funny!!!

Oh I had the inlet piece powder coated black to mach all my other accessories, I love this thing.

cheers, Kevin
