I was following a Ford out of the mountains pulling a two-wheel flatbed with a mini trackhoe on it when he started slowing down and finally came to a stop in the middle of a hill. I pulled around him, stopped and ask if he had problems. He said his transmission just crapped out. He didn't know what to do. It was a very bad place to be stuck, no shoulder on the road, blind spots, etc.
So I said, "I'll be happy to tow you to the next small town up the road about 4 miles” He says, Great!, I'll just unhook the trailer and be right with you. " I said "Don't bother, I can pull you both. " He looked at me like I was nuts. “Are you sure?” Yup!
So I got the cargo strap out, looped it between his front leaf springs, dropped it over my trailer hitch ball and said let's get outta here!
First gear no problem, second gear no problem, third gear a little problem and then I realized he was riding his brakes to keep the strap tight. Couldn’t stop or signal him to get off the brakes so we just kept trucken.
Got to the town OK, but when I got out, his front brakes were toast! Smoke pouring out of ‘em. Didn’t think he was riding them that much!
Anyway, we’d had enough fun by then so said goodbye and left him with his son (driving a chev) staring at what looked like two Weber barbecues bolted to each front end. Oh well, maybe they’ll get the right rig next time.
