A friend of mine with a 91 or 92 had the kid at the gas station pump gas into his tank... . ( In Oregon you can't pump your own gas)... . It started to run rough, coughed and died at stop lights... . He kept it running at stop lights by putting it in neutral and flooring it... . He figured it was a fuel filter so he got a new one and changed it and dumped some Marvel Mystery oil in the tank... . It ran better, so he finished his deliveries: He delivers cords of firewood..... He checked his receit that night and discovered the problem and drained the tank..... That was two weeks ago... . It seems to be running fine, but he wonders if the engine was damaged in some way???Any ideas??? It has about 180K on the odometer... ...

His is the worst case scenario for gas/diesel mix - when the engine keeps running. Much more than 50% gas and the engine won't run, very little damage. I would suspect that one tank caused about the same amount of injector and injection pump wear as 100k miles would. Gasoline is very dry, no lubricity, running it though a diesel fuel system can be likened to running a bearing without oil. That's why the MM oil made it run better.

In every case I've heard of when the station monkey makes the mistake it is covered by the station's insurance.

I'd be asking the station for a pump rebuild and new injectors.

That sucks. That whole can't pump your own gas thing still amazes me. I would think there is some liability on the part of the station. Like illflem said, I would be hitting them up for some $$$$

Well I dont mean to say anything negative about your friend so dont take it that way, but I am having a hard time understanding how he did not notice the kid putting GAS in his diesel truck, I understand that sometimes your just in too much of a hurry to notice somethings but that I think that I would definately notice.
