Has anyone had problems with both the fuel guage and the computer giving false information?

I ran out of fuel today with the guage showing 1/4 and the computer saying that I had 90 miles of travel left. Could it be a computer problem, a sending unit problem or a "dealer diagnosis" problem?

Thanks.

My 01 used to do the same thing, would still show 1/4 full when it was empty, I ended up biting the bullet and replaced to whole sender unit in the tank ($250 from the dealership) and problem solved.

Have heard others that have replaced the unit and did not fix the problem though :{

Learn to use the odometer more than the gauge, tis the only way.

Now repeat after me "the fuel gauge in my dodge truck is just there for decoration, it is NOT a functional part" ... tell yourself this about 100 or so times ... :-laf

You want P/N 4897669AB LEVEL UNIT KIT, Fuel. It's used on all 34 & 35 gallon tanks, gas or diesel, model year 2001. List is $51. 60 and it can be found for $35. 59 + shipping.

I think you need a new parts counter.

ran out of fuel

thanks guys,. thomas this 51. 00 part its available where? on line or another parts supplier, thanks marty.

Start by looking at this on my Readers Rigs page: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/user_gallery/displayimage.php?&photoid=24012&width=4 . It looks to me as though you need item #8 (P/N 4897669AB). The page is from the model year 2000 Parts Catalog. Your 2001 should be identical. If you need a clearer copy, PM me with an email address and I'll reply with a larger JPEG attached.

There are lots of online Mopar dealers where you can plug in parts numbers. Here are a few:

http://www.worldparts.com/kollerdodge/

http://www.dodge-auto-parts-dealer.com/parts.htm

http://www.mydodgeparts.com/

http://allchryslerparts.com/

The last one in the list has the lowest selling price. The part number should be good at any Dodge dealer. Some dealers charge as much as 50% more than the suggested list price.

If you use the search feature on this site and plug in +fuel +sender +repair you will get a lot to read.

What Thomas said... The sending unit went out on my son's '02 and we just replaced the sender unit itself not the whole assembly. Cost from the local dodge dealer was $60 something total.

We removed the rear bumber, spare tire, removed the filler neck from the bed, removed the bolts that hold the bed on, he and I lifted the bed by the wheel wells, moved it back about 2 feet and set it down. Unscrewed the collar from the sending unit assy. and removed it from the tank. The actual sending unit is held on to the assembly with 1 or 2 screws, replaced it with the new one, put everything back and so far so good.

Not even an hours work.

Ron

Mine died about a year and half ago while I was on the road in San Angelo, TX. It was replaced free under the vehicle's federal emission warrenty. The new one works just fine.
